This was the original, done a generation ago now; directed by Elaine May, and scripted by Neil Simon. Watching this, as I did after the remake, I was rather more taken with the serious side of the movie; which made this more of a disturbing, and even unpleasant, experience. Charles Grodin was excellent as the two faced husband, but the subject matter naturally is very serious. I would therefore recommend the 2007 remake by the Farrelly brothers, which did much more emphasizing the reasoning of the husband; yet in the end still concluded he was mistaken. So though it has been exceeded, I did yet largely enjoy the older film; and if one was to watch both, I would begin here.

Plot Synopsis: Three days into his Miami honeymoon, New York Jewish Lenny meets tall, blonde Kelly. This confirms him in his opinion that he has made a serious mistake and he decides he wants Kelly instead. Her rich father is less than keen and lets everyone - including Lenny - know that he hates everything about him and the way he is going on. |
