Book Description

December 1, 1996
A woman.  Her teenage daughter.  A handsome, laid-back, chauvinistic rancher.  And the savagery of unseen forces at large in the mountain wilds of Utah.  New York Times bestselling author Karen Robards is here at her passionate best as she tracks the perils of the wilderness, the hidden face of violence, and--most awesome of all--the powerful feelings that evolve between men and women when lives are at stake.

Lynn Nelson is beautiful, harried--and divorced.  A thirty-five-year-old single mother, she agrees to help chaperone her teenage daughter Rory and nineteen other girls on a wilderness trip.  It seems pretty simple at first: the trip is sponsored by Adventure Incorporated, the weather is fine, and nothing is more troublesome than the minor skirmishes that sometimes flare up between girls and their mothers.

Except that there's more lurking along these mountain trails than adolescent hormones.  Lynn and Rory find themselves set apart from the rest of the group, with only outfitter Jess Feldman for protection--he with the blazing baby blues, and the more than slightly macho attitude that women can't handle the outdoors.  Normally Jess would be protection enough, but surrounding the trio is a danger far more menacing than any of them realizes--the face of an unknown and all too real evil is at large.  As this terrifying ordeal plays itself out, the sparks that fly between Jess and Lynn make for a passion every bit as dramatic as the twisted trails of the majestic Uinta mountain range.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

When divorced Chicago anchorwoman Lynn Nelson, 35, signs on to chaperone high school students on a horseback riding vacation in the Utah mountains, she views it as an opportunity to bond with her increasingly estranged teenage daughter, Rory. In the prolific Robards's latest romantic tall tale (after Hunter's Moon), what Lynn doesn't count on, besides the bruising reality of actually riding horses, is finding love and stumbling on a plot to blow up the world. When Lynn meets hunky outfitter Jess, both immediately feel a strong antipathy that teeters perilously close to attraction. Matters take a melodramatic turn when an accident separates Lynn, Jess and Rory from their group and they happen upon a presumably deserted mining camp where they find themselves plunged into a nightmare. Confronted with a scene of mass murder, pursued by deadly religious cultists, they must depend on one another in order to survive?and to avert global catastrophe, for the cultists plan to detonate nuclear bombs and unleash chemical weapons throughout the world. Perils-of-Pauline chapter endings keep the pages turning, although cliched characterizations?Marlboro Man Jess, overachieving Lynn, annoying teen Rory?mar the whole. It's hard to accept that a contemporary career woman who exclaims "Rats! Curses!" when faced with a problem will play a pivotal role in averting Armageddon. But then, romantic suspense, not suspension of disbelief, has always been Robards's signature, and here, as before, she signs her tale with a flourish. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal

"How many more...heaving bosoms must readers endure?" groaned LJ's reviewer of Hunter's Moon (LJ 11/15/95). Not enough, if its appearance on national best sellers lists is any indication. A man and woman are separated from their cohorts during a wilderness trip, with predictable results.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start-bad ending, June 25, 2002
By
This Robard's book was a disappointment. The first half held me in its grasp, making me want to read faster and faster but I could only shake my head once the good guys and bad guys met. From that point, it became unrealistic. Did not care for the "end of the world" scenario and how conveniently everything happened for the good guys. For example, when the good guys were cornered and going to be killed, oops, the rock plateau falls and all but one terrorist is killed and this one happens to think that maybe his associates might have been mistaken in their beliefs. Get real! Sorry Karen, I love most of your action/thrillers but this was a major dissapointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous, December 5, 2007
I just really couldn't find anything about this story to like. The heroine was so full of herself. She had such a temper and just mean spirited that even when she was being portrayed as this caring mother, I just couldn't like her. When a branch smacks the hero in the face she thinks it's funny. Everytime he gets hurt, she thinks it's amusing. Good Grief! This caring mother is trapped in a mine having sex with the hero while her 14 year daughter is wandering around lost and hurt and they have no idea if she is okay. I would have been a wreck! The whole scenario of this cult blowing up the world along with all the rest was just so unbelieveable. I finished reading the book though was tempted to quit several times and even the ending where the hero has thrown himself out a second story window because the house is going to blow up. It stands to reason he is hurt but our heroine laughs and has a microphone reporting the story with no concern for him. What is it he sees in this self absorbed woman is beyond me. I would assume her job is more important than her daughter or marriage so really couldn't see this working. Other than sexually, I couldn't understand any relationship between them . Okay others liked it and guess we're all different (good thing)but I really didn't see anything to like about it. I have liked some of KR's other books but often I have to warm up to the heroines in her stories. I'm not sure why so many of them have to be so sassy. I'm all for women being independent but KR carries it too far sometimes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robards' best, by far..., April 6, 2002
A hometown fan, I've read all of Robards' books in a few months after discovering "Paradise County" in our local Target store. "Heartbreaker" is the best -- a delicious, fast-paced read with rich characters and delightful banter. I've actually given this book to several friends as gifts.

Also consider my second favorite, "Walking After Midnight." Both are what I call "pursuit" books, where the main characters are on the run, making for a heart-racing read where the main characters are better developed (the storylines focus on survival, street-smarts and the steamy romances that can grow in the process).
