5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, September 24, 2004
This review is from: Heartland (Audio CD)
When this album was originally released in America, RCA were going through a phase of releasing country albums with just nine tracks on them, so that explains why this is such a short album. A tenth track (Give a little love) was available to RCA at no extra cost - it appeared on their first hits album, released at around the same time. UK buyers got a much better deal because the album had six extra tracks added (five from their debut mini-LP plus Give a little love) - however, although that version (titled Give a little love) was later re-issued on CD, it has long been out of print.

There may only be nine songs here but there is plenty of quality. Three number one country hits (Turn it loos, Maybe you're baby's got the blues, I know where I'm going) plus another country top ten hit (Don't be cruel, a cover of the Elvis classic). Some people don't like their version of Don't be cruel, but I love it.

The album is completed by I'm falling in love tonight, Old pictures (co-written by K T Oslin), Cow cow boogie, Why don't you believe me, and The sweetest gift (with backing vocals by Emmylou), all of them wonderful songs.

While I generally prefer the two full-length albums that preceded this (Why not me, Rockin' with the rhythm), this is a brilliant album in its own right.

This is my favorite album by the Judds. I love every song. I was hooked on them when they came to my hometown fair over 20 years ago. I wore out my cassette taped of this album and was very excited when I found it on DVD. I wished the Judds could make more albums like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ace In the Hole, July 17, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Heart Land (Audio CD)
"Heartland" Is one of the most solid albums to ever have the Judd name on it. It was released in 1987 nearly two years after the monster album "Rockin' with The Rhythm". The Judds were at a critical point in their career. After phenonminal success with their previous releases, "Heartland" would either sink them or help them to swim. It turned out to be the ace in the hole for Naomi and Wynonna. Heartland produced three number one classics "Turn it Loose", Maybe your Baby's Got the Blues", "I Know where I'm Going", and countless album cuts that have become fan favorites. It also features a powerful top ten re-make of Elvis Presley's smash "Don't Be Cruel" as well as "The Sweetest Gift" which was the first song that The Judds learned when they first discovered their talent. "Heartland" is a classic. They don't make them like this one anymore!

Just going to pop in here and say this is a great cd from one of the best and most successful country duos of all time.
My favorite song on here is The Sweetest Gift, in which Emmylou Harris accompanies Naomi singing Harmony and the two really compliment Wynonna.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Judds Keep the Good Music Rollin' On!!, June 5, 2003

OK, Critics bashed their version of "Don't Be Cruel", but I thought they did a superb job of taking a classic song and making it their own. They didn't just re-record the song, they transformed it into a Judd song. "Turn it Loose", "Maybe Your Baby's Got the Blues", and "I Know Where I'm Going" were #1 hits and were just a little 'off the main road' as is most of the CD - but that's a good thing!! I was surprised how much I ended up liking "Cow Cow Boogie" - at first I wasn't sure about it, but later realized it was a fun song to sing along to. I have to say my favorite song on here is the first song the Judds learned to sing together - "The Sweetest Gift". Not only do their angelic harmonies shine to perfection, (Emmylou Harris also helped out during the chorus), but the lyrics very much represent what the Judds are all about - family values. Another exceptional release by the Judds!! Buy it!!

If I recall correctly this one was critically panned when released, but I really enjoy it. The Judd harmonies shine on ballads like the nostalgic and sentimental Old Pictures and the romantic Falling in Love Tonight. Also, don't miss the fabulous duet with Emmylou Harris, Sweetist Gift. The hits here were the Elvis remake Don't Be Cruel, Turn Me Loose and the beautiful Baby's Got the Blues.
