Book Description

January 1, 2007

Firefighter paramedic Terry Flanagan saw her clinic for migrant farm workers as the perfect way to make a difference. But when Dr. Jacob Landsdowne was assigned to oversee her project, she wondered if her dreams would go up in smoke.

Two years ago a tragedy had touched both their lives and almost destroyed Jacob's career. Now he was intent on rebuilding his reputation, and Terry's clinic was an unwanted distraction. Yet, with the well-being of women and children hanging in the balance, maybe it was time Jacob put aside his trust in himself...and turn to God.

More About the Author

I realized I wanted to be a writer at age eight, when I read my first Nancy Drew novel, The Secret of the Old Clock. Most little girl reach the end of that book wanting to be Nancy. I wanted to be the person who created the story!
The dream lay hidden for years while I became a teacher, married, had children...all the usual things. But eventually it re-surfaced, and I began to write, beginning with short children's stories for Sunday school take-home papers. It seemed a long time until that first acceptance, but eventually I began to sell. After some three hundred published short stories, I finally found the courage to work on the novel I'd always wanted to write.
Thirty-some published novels later, I still feel the same excitement every time I begin a new book--a mix of not believing I can do it combined with an overwhelming urge to see the story on the page.
A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and my own Pennsylvania Dutch roots eventually led me to the books I'm writing now about the Amish. The Pleasant Valley Amish series from Berkley Books are longer, more complex emotional stories with Amish main characters, while my forthcoming HQN suspense novels are more adventure-filled books set in Pennsylvania Dutch country. I'm also writing a Love Inspired series, The Bodine Family, set on the South Carolina coast where we have a second home.
When I'm not writing, I'm busy with church activities, traveling, and spending time with my three children and six beautiful grandchildren.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful romance, December 26, 2006
This review is from: Hearts Afire (The Flanagans, Book 5) (Love Inspired #380) (Mass Market Paperback)
Terry Flanagan, follows family tradition by coming a firefighter. Terry is impulsive, compassionate, and short of patience. A young migrant girl, Manuela, has touched her heart, and she wants to open a clinic to help the migrant workers.

Dr. Jake Landsdowne is an unwelcome guest from Terry's past. Two years ago they were involved in a situation that caused the death of a young woman who was stalking him. The fallout destroyed his carreer and sent Terry scurrying back home. Now Jake has been assigned by the hospital to oversee the clinic she wants to open. He is getting his career back on track and is determined to not let anything get in his way. Unfortunately, Terry keeps throwing up roadblocks in his road to success.

Marta Perry is the author of many books and she has a gift of pulling the reader into the story. Her series about the lively Flanagan famiily have kept fans entertained through a list of fascinating characters. The plotting is skillful and the faith message subtle but clear. The plight of migrant workers in America is a situation ripe for trouble. People with no chance of justice are locked into a lifestyle they have no hope of escaping. Marta Perry does a great job of revealing this problem. If you like the Flanagan's, this is one book you won't want to miss.

This one is Terry's story in the series of the Flanagan fire-fighter family.
Two years ago, Terry was involved in a case where the victim died. The doctor on duty (Dr. Jake Landsdowne) blamed her and her team for their incompetence. It also turns out that the doctor had a relationship with the victim at the time of her death. The fallout of the death severely damaged his career and caused Terry to doubt herself.
After having started over in her hometown, Terry meets some migrant workers and wants to open a clinic for their specific needs and the hospital assigns a doctor to oversee the clinic: enter Dr. Jake Landsdowne who is trying to forget the past and his part in the death on the girl.
Of course they butt heads from the get-go as Jake has not acknowledged his wrong by Terry and Terry is still haunted by their past. Despite this though, Terry forces herself to be a good Christian to Jake who begins to see that Terry would do her uttermost to save her victims.
The book lost one star because at the end I felt that Jake should have professed his feelings and apologized much more profusely to Terry. Very good read otherwise.
