Book Description

With no means to support herself, Ellie Kilmer agrees to work as a housekeeper for the young widower who lives on Dillon Island, hopeful she can obtain a proper reference. But Jackson Smith quickly realizes that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems--both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage.

When a marriage of convenience is offered, Ellie is initially humiliated. Though she is past the age most women marry, she has more pride than to agree to his outlandish suggestion. Yet what options does she have? To marry would mean a home and stability. So despite the rumors circling Jackson and his first wife, Ellie accepts this unlikely proposal...

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Two people in desperate circumstances.
One unlikely proposal.

Life has left few choices for Elvira Kilmer. Her hopes for marriage and a family of her own have long since passed her by, and her arrival on Dillon's Island, nestled in the Susquehanna River, is not of her choosing, either. She needs work. And Jackson Smith needs a housekeeper.

Yet Ellie never imagined the widower would be so handsome.

Jackson, on the other hand, has never met anyone quite so...plain. But he quickly comes to realize that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems--both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage.

When Jackson offers her something quite out of the ordinary, will Ellie look beyond mere necessity and risk opening her heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story! March 3, 2010
By Kimfurd
"Every wrong should be made right, and no right should be forgotten." (Gram, page 97)

Oh, my!! Oh, my! Oh, my!! I love, love, love it when a book sweeps me away and carries me into the heart of a thoughtful, realistic, heart-struggling faith and then tenderly shows me the Father's hand in the midst of the trial. Heart's Awakening is a precious, tender historical romance that reveals the true meaning of forgiveness and grace, and I am so very happy to recommend it to you!

Ellie Kilmer is a character your heart aches for the moment you meet her as she is struggling through the woods. When you learn of her true circumstances, you just want to hug the poor woman to your heart and take care of her. Well, then you add a handsome, wounded man with two precocious children to the picture, throw in a dash of scandal, a pinch of gossip and finish with a sprinkle of a long-ago first love you have the recipe for an unforgettable historical romance that will leave you full and satisfied! You'll have to pardon all the talk of recipes, and you'll have to read the story to discover a very unusual challenge Ellie faces in her kitchen, and most of all, you just have to have to read this book! You will love it!!

I think what spoke to me most clearly and honestly was Ellie's faith. Her unwavering ability to go to the Father even when her feelings were crushed, her determination to cling to Him when her faith felt incredibly fragile, and the utter completeness and calmness with which she spoke directly to the heart of whatever emotional challenge faced her within very unusual and uncertain circumstances was powerful! She quickly became a hero of the faith in my eyes, because she understood and offered forgiveness and unconditional affection even when she didn't have to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the love story? October 20, 2010
By Ivylea
I loved the idea of this book. I liked the fact that the heroine was a plain spinster and it wasn't your typical love (ie attraction)-at-first-sight between the two main characters. However, I found the love story line lacking. The plot seemed to move too slowly and the hero was often angry and judgmental while the heroine's main story line seemed to be mostly about mastering the stove and taking care of the children. Toward the end, when the hero's "real true love" appears, I thought there was finally some good tension. However, this too became a disappointment since it was wrapped up too quickly and simply. Overall, there was no tenderness between the characters and when I was done I wondered when they fell in-love. I certainly didn't read about it as it happened.

1.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most unlikeable hero I have ever read! July 16, 2010
By C. Hall
I am surprised that I actually finished this book,as I never came to like it at all! The male lead Jackson was a total self-centered, shallow, unfeeling creep! He had said such cruel hurtful things to our heroine- Ellie Kilmer, who we are reminded throughout the book is so 'PLAIN-looking' and he and his snotty 5 yr.old think so too, and say so several times! He even calls her "Spinster Kilmer" to start with, like anyone would address a person as "Spinster"!!!

By the totally unbelievable ending of this book I thoroughly detested Jackson, and wished that Ellie had walked away from him and the two boys, because she deserved far, far better!

The hours it took to read this were a total waste, and I wish they had been spent reading a true romance, with another hero that I could fall in love with, but all I found here was a hard-hearted JERK,who couldn't care less how his actions, such as twice marrying women he didn't even love, affected the women's lives!

1.0 out of 5 stars Miserable hero February 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have to agree with the other 1 star review. This is the most miserable hero I've ever read in a book. I love Christian romance novels because they are clean and inspirational. What a disappointment. I kept thinking out loud what a bum the hero was and yelling for the heroine to just leave. OK, I know it's just a book, and it probably is how things were in 1840, but I would have lived in the woods before I would have put up with this guy. I think he couldn't get over his dead wife, that he didn't actually like anyway, his missed opportunity with the girl who threw him over and then kept throwing up to the heroine how unattractive she was as if he had anything to offer. What a bum! I am at least happy I didn't pay for this one, but I am sorry I took the time to read it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book ever June 4, 2010
By Gwyn V.
Being comfortable in life sometimes causes people to be lazy. Desperation however can be a very powerful motivator. Elvira Kilmer is desperate. She has no hope of ever having a family of her own. She has to find work to keep from being on the streets and being destitute. She finds a widower, Jackson, who needs a housekeeper and someone to take care of his young sons. Elvira is plain. Jackson is handsome. Jackson also has a secret about his former wife. Will Elvira accept a most unusual arrangement? Will Jackson and Elvira find peace?

The book seems very formulaic. Girl is destitute. Man needs help. They meet. Make an arrangement.... blah, blah, blah.

I have to admit I wasn't impressed. It was a book. Something to read. I wish a better something. I read a quote somewhere last week (I wish I remember where) that said something to the effect of "When a scene becomes boring, make the characters fight over something..." The author of this book, Delia Parr seems to employ that strategy, and the characters fight a lot.

Not my favorite.
