This review is from: Heart's Desire (Arabesque) (Paperback)
I don't want to be a plot-spoiler. I want you to read this novel for yourselves. But, I WILL say that if you like a fast-paced novel that grabs your attention from the beginning and doesn't let go until the very end, then this is the book for you. Kara and Brent are a very human couple. Their first meeting is unconventional, to say the least! Everything about this novel is unusual, which is why I liked it so much. Ms. Jackson isn't afraid to push the envelope. It's not your average romance novel. These characters don't always behave according to societal rules. But then real-life is not cookie-cutter perfect. Nor is Kara or Brent. They have their problems, and they overcome them. Very inspirational for those of us who like a dose of reality in our modern-day fairy tales. Excellent job, Ms. Jackson!

WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE WHEN WE PRACTICE TO DECEIVE!,
By
This review is from: Heart's Desire (Arabesque) (Paperback)
But we find in this web of deceit, the hunter gets captured by the game! Ms. Monica Jackson has penned a beautiful tale of how revenge can turn around and bite the one in pursuit.Kara Smith learned on her mother's deathbed that her father (who deserted them before Kara was born) was none other than a prominent government official, Congressman Sidney Eastman. She is so incensed at this knowledge that she devises a plan to bring the Congressman down. Brent Stevens, the Congressman's Administrative Assistant is the instrument Kara initially uses to bring her plan of revenge into play. But she didn't figure on falling for the prey she had set up. The stage is set and he web begins when Kara meets Brent at a party and passes herself off as an easy "woman of the night." This in itself goes against the grain of Kara's upbringing. Her mother had provided an environment of the strictest religious edits,in which romance of the soul was a definite no no. Though the sexual tension was quite evident in this first meeting, the fulfillment was not to be. Kara accomplished her goal if stealing papers from Brent that would be detrimental to his employer (Congressman Eastman) if they should ever become public. Now the roller coaster of deceit really gets started. But the ride would take Kara on many unanticipated adventures. Now the net of deceit must expand to include meetings between Kara and her siblings Jenny and Dante. The introduction of these characters really add much drama to the situation. Ms. Jackson pens a romance tale that whets our appetites for more of the same. I personally have ordered all the rest of her books and look forward to reding them with as much enthusiasm as this one. A winnah!

Talk about family drama,

This review is from: Heart's Desire (Arabesque) (Paperback)
Kara Smith got the shock of her life and on her mother's death bed at that. Her father was not really dead, but a famous congressman. All Kara could feel for her father was anger. He wanted her mother to get rid of her. Her mother loved this man to death. Kara decided she would make him pay for her mother's pain.Kara met Brent Stevens. Her father's right hand man. Brent was also engaged to Kara's half sister Jenny. Jenny turned out to be kind of like a fatal attraction when it came to Brent. Kara's half brother Dante, was drooling all over her when they met. He had his problems too, with women. Kara's stepmother Tiffany, was a drunk. But, after I continued to read their story, I see how she was just trying to drown her sorrows. Brent and Kara fell in love unexpectedly and that love was truly tested. This was a wonderful story by Ms. Jackson. I wanted to re-read this story right before I picked up Tiffany's story Never Too Late For Love.

Kara Smith embarks on a journey of revenge when her dying mother reveals that Kara's father is Congressman Sidney Eastman. Driven by ambition, he tells Kara's mother to end her pregnancy, and moves on with his life. Kara infiltrates Eastman's office, but her plans backfire, leading to complications, which have dire consequences.Brent Stevens is a bright Admin Assistant employed to Eastman. He is engaged to Kara's half-sister and though he breaks off the engagement, he's still at the family's beck and call. I didn't get a strong sense of who he is, but the Eastman's certainly know how to play on his feelings of guilt. I don't remember if there's mention of his family, but I do recall he started out poor. Kara Smith is a sheltered thirty-year-old woman who is raised in a religious cult. She too is riddled by guilt, but quickly finds her way in the new world that's opened up before her. I liked the pace at which the story unfolded. Heart's Desire had plenty of plot twists that kept the story moving. The writer does know how to keep the reader turning the pages. I also downloaded a sample of Jenny's story Too Hot to Handle and whipped through it in no time, which is a good sign. I could have lived without the annoyance that came through Brent's association with the Eastman family. Jenny, their daughter, is spineless, senseless and demanding. By the end of the book, she descends to being spiteful, even more needy and destructive. I like reading black romances, so this was a treat for me. Though the book was a fast read, I had some issues with it. I thought the editing could have been tighter, which would have improved the story. Brent's readiness to pay for Kara's services at the start of the book threw me a little, making me wonder about his character. It turned me off him a bit. The way she blackmailed her way into the Legislative Assistant's job seemed improbable to me. Of course, Brent didn't take her seriously for long and soon brushed aside her threats of exposure. While she did seem naïve, Kara's thoughts sometimes didn't translate the way I expected them to, especially coming from someone who'd been brought up the way she was. I think Heart's Desire could be an awesome book, but it needs more work to get there.

Kara Kincaid is a woman with a mission. However, she does not count on Brent Stevens coming into her life or disrupting her intentions. Also, Kara did not think of others being involved or getting hurt by her actions. Kara meets Jenny Eastman and her family. They have more than one thing in common. Kara must makes some decisions that could not only hurt her and her career, but hurt a lot of other people, who she has come to care a lot about. However, can Kara let her feelings overcome her desire for revenge or will love play a major part in her "heart's desire"?
