Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-8?This book gives a brief overview of the Olympic Games and then traces the history of the Special Olympics from its inception in the 1960s to the present day. Dinn explains the rules of involvement and then describes the different sports that are included. This section, although written in a dry manner, is interesting because it also profiles people who have participated in the Special Olympics and details how they have gone on to develop other skills. The United Sports program, one of several that combines special and varsity athletes, is described. Excellent-quality full-color photographs appear throughout. The writing is not exciting but the information given in this positive book certainly shows another side of those people some call "handicapped."?Margaret C. I am a Special Olympian and have been for 17 years. This book is totally amazing. I recommend this book to anyone with a mental or physical challenge. The families with a challenged person in their family will totally be in awe after they read this book. I am also a global messenger for Special Olympics. I have gained self-esteem because of Special Olympics. Whatever I do in Special Olympics, I know my family is behind me 100%.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Experience, April 7, 2001
By
Mike Kocabinski (Aberdeen, South Dakota) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hearts of Gold: A Celebration of Special Olympics and Its Heroes (Library Binding)
This book is one of the most enjoying books I have had the priviledge of reading. I am saying this as a parent whose son Chad Kocabinski is one of the featured athletes. He is the young man talked about in the equestrian events section.

I and my wife will have this book forever as a living memorial to our son who passed away from cancer on the 23rd of December 2000. The way the author did her interviews and the way the book has been written and it's content is something that makes us to be very proud. We had it on display at the funeral home as a tribute to not only him, but to Special Olympics as a whole.

As a matter of fact, we would like to get 8 more copies of this book to place in each one of the schools in our community in his memory.
