Al Jarreau and Metropole Orkest: LIVE

As the title suggests, My Old Friend, Grammy-award winning singer and song stylist Al Jarreau pays a loving tribute to one of his longtime kindred spirits – the legendary keyboardist, composer and producer George Duke, who unexpectedly passed away last year. By gathering an impressive list of special guests that include bassists Marcus Miller and Stanley Clarke; saxophonists Gerald ... Read more in Amazon's Al Jarreau Store

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 Minutes of Classic Al Jarreau June 7, 2003
By Raine
Format:Audio CD
This is my favorite Al Jarreau cd of all time. Even though it's over ten years old, his music is priceless, and will be good forever. I've owned this cd since 1994, and still listen to it today! If you don't own this yet, you should get this now. This is why.
1. All or Nothing - 10/10 This sound has a great beat, and is just fun to listen to. A great song to start the cd. This has to be one of my favorite songs on this cd. 3:58
2. So Good - 9/10 A beautiful ballad from the great Al Jarreau! Not my favortie piece on this collection, but it's still good enough for me to give it a 9/10. It repeats a lot at the end. And doesn't show off this vocals as much as other tracks do. 4:39
3. All of My Love - 10/10 All of My Love is another personal favorite. Probably my third favorite track on the album. Although, this song is jazz, this ones beat is a little different. I never grow tired of this track. His voice also sounds really good on this one! 4:43
4. Pleasure Over Pain - 9/10 The first really soft and slower ballad on the track. This is a beautiful song about how love is the most important thing in the world. The great thing about this track, is that it doesn't repeat a lot, even though it's over 5 minutes long. Although this is not written by Jarreau it has some very good lryic's that fit him well. 5:20
5. Yo Jeans - 8/10 This song is very short, and doesn't show off this vocal range. This is the only song on the album that I don't really care for. The lryics (written by Jarreau) are good though. 1:46
6. Way to Your Heart - 10/10 Probably my favorite song on the album, it's got an amazing beat. A great song to follow "Yo Jeans". The lryics wirtten partly by Jarreau are perfect, and the melody shows his voice of perfectly. The chorus is also very catchy and fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Album August 12, 2005
By Mark
Format:Audio CD
This one isn't quite as catchy and radio oriented as "Jarreau" but it is a compelling mix of storytelling ballads and fast moving pop.
The title track is infused with meaning -- a father singing a lullaby to his children about how to overcome the obstacles in life. Deeply moving and thoughtful. My favourite song on the album. Similar to "Not Like This" on the 1983 "Jarreau" album --introspective but not sappy.
"10K High" is a friendly, upbeat song with some interesting synth work involving the vocals.
"Yo Jeans" with McFerrin is a change of pace, but not one of my favourites. "More Love", "One Way" and "Killer Love" are melodic and pleasant but not particularly memorable.
Bought this one on LP years back and still like it. Not quite as consistent from top to bottom as "Jarreau" but nonetheless a very good pickup if you can find it. Not easy to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart's Horizon...under the radar but a true "keeper" October 21, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Al Jarreau is an amazing jazz vocalist, and "Heart's Horizon" is my personal favorite. I first bought it on cassette tape (back in the 90s!) and just wo' it out; had to buy it again on CD, liner notes and all. The songs are funky/sexy, romantic, compelling...

Once, on a road trip several years ago, I played the tape nonstop while driving up the Pacific Coast Highway towards a fateful encounter with the man who turned out to be my soul mate; songs like "One Way", "All or Nothing at All", "So Good"--even the painful reflections of "More Love" and "Pleasure over Pain"--helped set the mood for new beginnings and happy endings. We should've invited Al to the wedding.

It's all there--thoughtful lyrics, great arrangements, well-chosen vocalists. Enjoy!

The best tracks on this disk are, All or Nothing at All, 10k High, All of My Love, I Must Have Been a Fool. Yo' Jeans doesn't work for me, however.
