A wonderful story similar to Jan Karon's Mitford Series., May 11, 1999
With Hearts and Hymns and Voices is the story of a small English village invaded by a television crew as they prepare for and film a Lenten service in the village church. The beginning of the book gives a list of the cast of characters, characters that the reader will become involved with and soon grow to love, characters that the reader will not want to leave at the end of this delightful tale of the village of Sandford. Various vignettes and relationships are related and most are satisfactorily tied together at the end of the book. If you're like me, you'll be clamoring for more like this from author Pam Rhodes after you read With hearts and hymns and voices!

A fascinating read, highly recommended, September 12, 2010
This review is from: With Hearts and Hymns and Voices: A Novel (Paperback)
A religious meeting can lead to some very nonreligious relations. "With Hearts and Hymns and Voices" is the story of Clive and his wife Helen as they work with the BBC to do a gospel show from their small village. But when Helen becomes too involved with one of the television team, the small village just may never be the same. "With Hearts and Hymns and Voices" is a fascinating read, highly recommended.

Slow moving: Never pulled me into the story, August 13, 2010
This review is from: With Hearts and Hymns and Voices: A Novel (Paperback)
With Hearts and Hymns and Voices is the story of a sleepy English village invaded by a television production crew after the local church is selected to be featured on a popular television program, Songs of Praise. The author, as mentioned above, has been the presenter on the real-life version of this show for many years and makes an appearance as herself in the book.
While With Hearts and Hymns and Voices does provide an interesting look into the behind-the-scenes happenings of producing a show such as Songs of Praise, the fictional story line and characters did not hold my interest. The book moves at a slow pace, possibly to stay in line with the sleepy English village in which it is set, but 150 pages into the book (with a great deal of small print on each page), I had still not been drawn into the story. I could picture Reverend Clive Linton, the laid back pastor, and Jack, the shy but likable retired bachelor, moving through the streets of Sandford, but the remainder of the characters never came alive for me.
I wanted to like this book, I really did. I kept reading, especially after finding several very positive reviews for the book on-line, and there were moments when I thought the book was going to finally grab my attention and keep me reading with a bit less effort, but unfortunately, that time never truly came. While I cannot heartily recommend this book, I seem to be in the minority, so if you are interested in the behind-the-scenes happenings of a television production and you have time to curl up with the tale of a small English village, by all means give it a try.
This book was provided to me by Kregel Publications in exchange for my honest review. The thoughts printed in this review are entirely my own.
