5.0 out of 5 stars Hearts of Iron III Collection [Download] August 15, 2012
    By Harin
    Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
My System Specs: Windows 7 64 bit, Intel i7-920 processor, 6 gigs RAM, Radeon 5870 video card. Basically a machine from 2009 or 2010.

    Game Installation: Flawless

Internet connection: Only needed for updates. My version did not require Steam.

Game Performance: Flawless; Graphics: None to speak of, but appropriate. Consists of Map and Information Panes; Sound: Very basic, but appropriate

User Interface: Non-standard for a non-standard game. Lots of information but laid out well and easy to access.

Copy Right Protection: No Steam required. No CD required. The publisher has a unique way to help combat piracy. They request you register your game on their website. It is voluntary and not necessary to play the game, but if you do you will find a hundred plus page manual and strategy guide that are very well done. The forums are full of information too. The manual that came on the game disk is well made and will get you started.

Updates: Updated via a button on main screen. Pushed once, updated immediately. The update went so fast I thought it had not updated and pushed it again. It caused no problems and eventually I noticed the version number had actually changed already.

Type of Game: Complex Grand Strategy in the true sense of the term. Research, Production, Espionage, Supplies, Diplomacy are all in your control. Maneuver units on land are division. Naval units are represented individually for carriers, battleships, heavy cruisers and light cruisers. Destroyers, submarines, transport units are represented by flotilla. Air power is represented by wings of approximately 100 aircraft per unit.

Turns: Real time with pauses at the player's discretion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome game for history buffs April 28, 2012
    By Asd
    Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Just like every other Paradox grand strategy title, Hearts of Iron 3 is quite challenging to get into. The first time I tried with just the base game, I gave up because I couldn't figure out what to do and didn't like the look and performance of the game.

With the 2 expansions though (Semper Fi and For The Motherland, which this collection includes), I decided to try again and I'm glad I did. They greatly improved the performance of the game at full speed by adding multi-threading support and the look and feel of the world map is much more pleasant.

It's a great simulation of the World War 2 era at a grand scale and you get to control a nation to influence how things play out. Gameplay centers around the major powers on the Axis, Allies or Comintern sides, but you're free to choose any of the dozens of nations. What I found fascinating was actually learning about the history and reasoning behind events in WW2. I didn't know much about WW2 before I started, but with the help of Wikipedia, I had a lot of fun learning about things like the Maginot line and why Germany had to go through Belgium, why Japan tried to control the Pacific, etc.

My recommendation for new players is to try the Scenarios first to get a handle on combat, unit organization and AI automation of your armies. Once you're comfortable, start the full campaign and slowly set the different tabs from AI control to "normal"/manual control. That way you can figure out one tab at a time.

Highly recommended for anyone with interest in WW2 history and the patience to learn the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Grand Strategy May 21, 2012
    By BMar
    Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
The game is at this point the best grand strategy WWII game out. There are no other large games that I know of that let you decide such details. Like several Paradox games they don't aim at the general public but specifically at those of us that want a game like this.

    CONS:
The learning curve is hard to get over. You can decide items right down to how you want your supply lines to get to the troops. For some people that is a tough entry barrier. The in game tutorials leave so much to be desired that it often does more harm then good. I over came that by finding some excellent youtube tutorials by a channel named surray01

The game has some stability issues. The game working in a 64 bit system can have some issues. There are some easy solutions on the forums that involve changing the game's header to allow more then 2 GB of memory that solve allot of the issue.

Depending on how you play the game you can have long slow times of doing nothing but managing economy and production.

    PROS:

Nothing besides other similar Paradox games gives you the level of troop movement and strategic options. For instance most games bombers are used to damage troops directly in this game they can do that, patrol for other aircraft, bomb infrastructure, bomb supply lines, or simply bomb for moral's sake and probably more options then that.

This grand strategy offers multiplayer co-op which I personally have not seen anywhere else in the market.

This detail is minor for some but made the game personally. This game is almost entirely able to be played with just a mouse. For me this is a great positive because it allows me to hold my infant and play the game at the same time. Also the game is paused simply by hitting the space bar.
