Book Description

Three years after Kate Sterling's heart was shattered by the unexpected death of her husband, she packs up what is left of her life and moves back to Harvest Bay, Ohio, with her young daughter. She soon discovers that her sleepy hometown has changed--and that she has been given a second chance at love. But is God leading her to a love linked to the past . . . or to one who will walk with her into the future?

In her debut novel, author Jen Stephens bursts on the literary scene with a warmth and charm that shines through her writing right into the reader’s heart. With down-home candor and skilled word-weaving, Stephens allows her story to unfold through believable characters, drawing readers in right from the beginning and carrying them on a pleasant journey with enough twists and turns along the way to maintain interest to the very last page. Congratulations on a great first novel, and I certainly expect to see more from this author in the future!
--Kathi Macias, award-winning author of My Son, John

Stephens's debut story about the redemption of heartache took me to a place where the important things of life were made important again. Her writing is a reflection of the story-telling characteristics of the Creator: not what the characters expected or prayed for, but what brought real love and value in the end.
--Rebeca Seitz, author of the Sisters, Ink Series

"The Heart’s Journey Home is a heartwarming story and a witness to how God works in the lives of the faithful who wait patiently for Him to reveal his purpose."
--Diane Black, Tennessee State Senator

"A wonderful story that is sure to touch the hearts of romance readers, The Heart's Journey Home is a sweet tale of healing and love."
--Kathleen Fuller, best-selling author of A Man of His Word

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Relevant May 7, 2010
Format:Paperback
There was so much I loved about this book I'm not sure where to begin. It's a beautifully told story about second chances. Jen Stephens creates relatable characters with real life struggles. The story had so many levels too; healing from loss, returning to your roots, finding love again -- but the heart of the story was in rediscovering Faith.

Along with being such a great story, The Heart's Journey Home has tremendous cultural relevance. There's something for everyone, but as a thirty-something y/o woman, I understood the characters' phase in life, balancing kids and career. While I recommend this book for everyone, I think single parents would find it exceptionally interesting -- not just for its entertainment value, but for the hopeful message and it's realistic portrayal of life as a single Christian parent. And I wouldn't do the book justice if I didn't mention that it's beautifully romantic as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Keeper! July 7, 2010
Format:Paperback

When her faith falters, hope hides, and love seems forever gone after the death of her husband, Kate Sterling takes seven-year-old daughter Maddie and returns to her roots in Harvest Bay, Ohio.

Kate is a "doer", but all the working and helping others has not helped her move on with her life even after three years. Ryan's brother Nathan has been there for Kate and Maddie, giving comfort and security, but he looks so much like Ryan he is a constant reminder of their loss. However, a special bond holds them close to each other. Still, Kate's faith in God's plan for her life falters.

Back in Harvest Bay her support system is huge with unconditional love from family and friends and her receptiveness to the gentle nudging of the Holy Spirit, help her begin her journey toward a newness of life. The spiritual emptiness begins to recede. The reader is privileged to vicariously experience her journey as author Jen Stephens creates a story so true to life it seems more like fact than fiction. Words from one of the minor characters set the foundation for the story. She says, to be sure you recognize the difference in God's plan and your plan for your life.

Adam Sullivan, a single father and the varsity coach for Harvest Bay high school, has had so many of his dreams shattered he is not sure of God's plan or if there really is a plan for him. His journey to an understanding of salvation and its rewards reveals many facets of his, Kate's, and Kate's grandfather's personalities. The Bible scriptures, the way they are presented, and the spiritual growth that follows is compelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this story! August 15, 2010
Format:Paperback
The Heart's Journey Home was an exceptional debut novel by a fantastic new author. This story was complex and deeply romantic, but also spiritual and incredibly edifying. I learned a lot about the characters, about myself, and also about forgiveness, healing, and following God's voice from this story.

Sometimes God leads us places and though we don't realize the full impact of His reasoning until He reveals it to us, if we are sensitive to God's leading He will give us more than we hoped for or imagined. This story showed how each Christian needs to realize that what we think is best may not be what He thinks is best, so we have to know His voice in order to be fully in God's will. I loved how this book illustrated all of those things, and so much more.

The characters in this novel were all complex and three dimensional. I loved how the author showed how strong love is and how it doesn't have to be mutually exclusive, or limited to one person. She also allowed her characters to feel many different things and to seek God's will in the process. I loved how much of a tender and emotional journey this book was for me. I loved how detailed and intricately complex the heart was portrayed to be.

The title for this book was perfect because it did show the heart's journey home and the healing that took place in all of the characters' lives as they were transformed by God's love. I adored this book. It made think. It made me smile. It made me sigh. That's a great novel. I am now a devoted fan of Ms. Stephen's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Heart's Journey Home is a wonderful book! May 11, 2010
Format:Paperback
"The Heart's Journey Home" is Jen's debut novel, and hopefully not her last!! It is a novel showing God's grace and how He works in the lives of the faithful. If we are patient and wait on the Lord's timing, He will renew our strength and give us the desires of our heart. Kate's great-grandpa reminds me of my granddaddy! So wise and loving! A strong man of God, he lovingly guides Kate to rediscover her faith. She struggles, as do a lot of us, with why a loving God would take her husband and her little girls daddy.
I really love how Jen developed her characters. I felt like I knew each one of them! She tells the story in such a way that I could imagine myself there in Harvest Bay, Ohio! This is a wonderful Christian romance that I hope everyone will take the time to read. You won't be sorry!

The book was OK. Too many twists and turns for my preference and not really believable as a story, in my opinion. Enjoyed getting to "know" the characters.
