Editorial Reviews

Donna Land, program director for KRCL-FM, Salt Lake City

I am such a fan of blue haiku and their CD. They are terrific and will generate very high interest.

Product Description

blue haiku’s first CD, heat beneath the sand, includes ten original songs written by guitarist/vocalist Phillip Bimstein (two co-authored with veteran songwriter Michael Smith) and arranged by the group. Their contemporary songs blend voice, oboe, English horn, violin, guitar and upright bass in classically nuanced interplay with elements of improvisation. The sandstone canyons and landscapes of blue haiku’s home state of Utah are evoked in “Desert Rain” and “Westwind,” which also laments the intrusion of city-bred air pollution into the Grand Canyon. “Heartbeat of the World” and “Take Me In (To Your Wilderness)” express a passion for nature. “Venezuela” liltingly paints the picture of a love-forsaken woman working in a chocolate factory. “Rainy Season” and “Old Story” were co-authored with Michael Smith (“The Dutchman,” “Crazy Mary”). The intricate arrangements feature well crafted solos by the violin, oboe, English horn and bass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Surprise, March 15, 2002
By
This review is from: Heat Beneath the Sand (Audio CD)
Blue Haiku's debut album has been a wonderful surprise. This quartet takes us to new musical territory that feels like home: new, bright, vibrant forays into places music has never been, yet the group is equipped with traditionally classical instruments: oboe, upright bass, guitar and violin. But they come at you in a very unclassical, muscular, folk rock way. Immediately apparent is the groups unquestionable musicianship and unprecedented approach, less so is the subtle and evocatively nuanced lyrics that revolve around a universe of passion and the happy (and not so happy) troubles it brings. Each song is a gem--a musical haiku.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional CD, September 2, 2007

This review is from: Heat Beneath the Sand (Audio CD)
Blue Haiku's music is different. It doesn't fit into a category. It is a category unto it's own.

The music pulls you right into it, like a widing river - there's a surprise around the bend.

My favorite song is Rainy Season. It's takes me right to Sitka Alaska, where it rains over 100 inches a year.

My recommendation - try this music . . .and your soul will be touched!
