Simply phenomenal picking!, June 20, 1998
This review is from: Heat (Audio CD)
This CD, like Dykes previous "Fingerstyle Guitar" is a marvel of technique, speed, and emotion. Yes, Dykes can make a guitar talk, at times rollicking, others reflective, again joyous and fun-loving. He shows off his chops, and while he tips his hat to influences like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Leo Kottke, and others, he is definitely his own man, with an instantly identifiable style. On one tune he even manages to do enough string bending to sound like an homage to the master of the five-string banjo, Earl Scruggs. Anyone who loves guitars will love this CD. It ain't rock, it ain't country, and it sure ain't jazz--it's Doyle Dykes, and it is worth it at twice the price.

Underratted player!!, March 5, 2011

About ten years ago, a friend gave me this album on a cassette tape, and I played it over and over and over.... I was extremely happy to find it on CD. My favorite track is "Battle in the Vally of Elah", because Doyle played it on a 12-string guitar. He seriously needs to do a LOT more of that! There is not a dull track on this album as far as I'm concerned. I can listen to him all day. I can tell he had a lot of fun making this album. Clear and precise with his playing, he is an underrated master of his craft.

First saw Doyle in late 90's after he started touring for Taylor Guitars. Was totally blown away by his playing and got this CD back then. This is one of my favorite and if you're an acoustic guitar fan, you have to have this CD.
