Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bad boy pilot Alec Porter and smart, sexy Sydney Shanks ignite fireworks in this richly plotted, steamy romantic suspense. After nearly dying in a plane crash, Alec determines to take advantage of his "second chance" and make amends with Sydney, the woman whose love he spurned less than a year before. At the time, Sydney was in the process of sending her much older husband, millionaire Russell Reck, to jail for murder and fraud, and Alec, who had helped Sydney turn Reck over to the FBI, was in no position to commit. Now Alec realizes how important Sydney is to him, but his epiphany may have come too late. Sydney is engaged to Internet whiz Jackson Bosse, and the two are working together to build a children's art gallery. Their efforts are stunted, however, when Reck is released from jail. While the wily ex-convict attempts to sabotage the gallery, kill Sydney and manipulate his daughter who harbors ill-will against her "stepmonster" as well as a crush for Jackson into helping him, Alec and Sydney struggle to resolve their feelings for one another. Bicos (Perfect Timing, etc.) skillfully weaves each thread of this engrossing tale ever tighter, and the threat that a happy ending may not be in the cards for this hero and heroine will keep readers riveted to the page. (July) Forecast: Expect strong sales for this fiery romantic intrigue. Positive word-of-mouth and advertising in the L.A. Times promising free copies to the first 250 readers who respond will help Bicos's latest receive the reception it deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A winning romance, June 28, 2001
This review is from: Heat Of The Moment (Zebra Romantic Suspense) (Paperback)
Sydney Shanks gave the evidence to the Feds that placed her former spouse Russell Reck in jail. Her stepdaughters loathe her for what she did to "sweet" daddy. Worse, Sidney knows that if the abusive Russell is released he will seek vengeance probably trying to kill her. All Sydney wants is to be left alone to work on her arts center project, but now her worst nightmare begins because the Feds free Russell and his target is Sydney.

To make matters worse, if possible, Alec Porter has returned. Years ago, she left the bad seed though she loved him. Alec swears that he has changed and wants to atone for how he behaved towards her and what he has done in his life. However, before he can do anything, he needs to keep his beloved safe from the (w)Reck(ing) crew that want her dead even if it means he must die to do so.

HEAT OF THE MOMENT is an exciting romantic suspense novel that never slows down for a paragraph. The story line is faster than an express train and filled with plenty of action. The Recks are a dangerous, nasty lot, almost cartoonish in their ugliness. However, the tale clearly belongs to the brave heroine, but especially her champion, who desperately seeks redemption and a second chance at love, but first he must keep both of them alive.

I didn't dislike this book. I didn't like it either. The plot idea was good but the execution was fair.

Information from the past was given in bits and pieces throughout the book and NOT in the order in which they transpired. This made it almost impossible to put together the sequence of previous events. When did Sydney & Alec meet? How long were Sydney & Reck married before she turned him in? When did Alec come back into town? Had he seen Sydney since he'd been back? I suppose if I'd taken notes it would have helped but who knew it would be necessary?

The characters had no depth to them at all.

Sydney: Why did she marry her first husband? Why did she marry her second husband? Why was she engaged to Jackson?

Alec: His character went in so many different directions it was impossible to pin it down. Was he a good guy or bad guy? Honest or dishonest? Caring or selfish?

Rocky Reck: Can you say spoiled, immature, mean-spirited brat? And it made no sense that Sydney would ignore the way Rocky treated her, constantly insulting! And how clueless was Rocky not realizing what was going on with her dad until the very last minute? And she was going to law school?

Jackson: Couldn't tell you!

This was one of those books that when I was done I felt I knew less about it than when I started!

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste!, September 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Heat Of The Moment (Zebra Romantic Suspense) (Paperback)
Weak characters, weak writing, and a very weak plot equal a waste of time and money. There really is no plot to this book, no matter how hard I tried to find one. If you want to read a book about characters desperately in need of intensive psychotherapy that can't seem to handle any type of normal relationship, then this is for you. On the other hand, if you want to read something with merit, any other book you pick up will do nicely.
