5.0 out of 5 stars "Mister Tibbs" is the thing., March 30, 2000

For me, although "In the Heat of the Night" had a fine score, "They Call Me Mister Tibbs!" is the main attraction here. The "Main Title" is memorable, vintage Jones R&B/soul; "Soul Flower" is a mellow but swinging track that I can never listen to just once; and "Blues for Mister Tibbs" is a funky Hammond organ rendition of the title track. To me, Jones' work on this film is at least equal to Isaac Hayes' towering "Shaft." A must for anyone who appreciates Jones as a composer.

This import release includes two selections on a single disk. Quincy's arrangements soar, and it is easy to see why he was in such demand at this time. I particularly like the "In the Heat of the Night" release, where Quincy's arrangements showcase his command of dynamics, with Ray Charles's wailing lead vocals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, October 31, 2009
This review is from: In The Heat Of The Night (1967 Film) / They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970 Film): Original MGM Motion Picture Soundtrack [Enhanced CD] (Audio CD)
On a simplistic level, you can divide the blues into two catagories, rurual and urban. That is what these two sountracks, and this CD does.

Of course, with a genius, things are never quite that simple. Quincy Jones did the soundtrack for both these films. In The Heat Of The Night, the film, transpires in a small southern town, Sparta, Mis. The soundtrack has a rural feel, with harmonicas, steel guitar and treated panio. But Jones also adds his lush arrangments, and fleshes this music out to the most polished it can be without losing its country grit.

Mr. Tibbs' sountrack is urban funk blues all the way, and has all the electric flutes and driving guitars you would expect such music to have in 1970. Fantisticlly lush blues.

Urban, rural, when you have Quincy Jones at the helm, the labals don't matter, the music does, and it does not get better than this.

Aloha Everyone,
I spent some time looking for a particular CD and finally found it right here on Amazom. I picked what I thought was a good vendor and indeed it was. Received my CD within a 5 days, here in Hawaii that is a miracle, nicely packaged and in perfect condition. The whole process was so easy and I again was especially happy at the timely fashion it arrived. Mahalo Amazon.com and my music buff who carried the CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack, except for 3 vocal tracks, January 13, 2000

Vintage swinging-60s soundtracks with great instrumental tracks.

However, the vocal and country music tracks throw off the flow of the CD. Program out bumpkin tracks 10 (Bowlegged Polly) and 19 (Foul Owl) as well as terrible pseudo-swinging track 9 (It Sure is Groovy).
