Book Description

This respected text deals with large-scale, easily known thermal phenomena and then proceeds to small-scale, less accessible phenomena. The wide range of mathematics used in Dittman and Zemansky's text simultaneously challenges students who have completed a course in impartial differential calculus without alienating those students who have only taken a calculus-based general physics course. Examples of calculations are presented shortly after important formulas are derived. Students see the solutions of problems related to the formulas. Actual thermodynamic experiments are explained in detail. The student sees the applicability of abstract thermodynamic concepts and formulas to real situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Physics students, November 3, 1998
By A Customer
The is by far the best book on thermodynamics that I have read.It is often called as "the Bible" of Physics by students who are studying Physics at the undergradute and postgraduate level in Indian universities. Most concepts can be understood which can clear the doubts in the students mind.Such a book is very essential for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quality Book on Thermodynamics, October 20, 2007

I used this book in my undergraduate thermodynamics/statistical mechanics course. I found it to be quite good. It's fairly easy to read and provides enough detail to give the reader a good understanding of the material.

The exercises are challenging enough to be useful, but not so difficult as to leave the reader feeling hopeless. I don't recall coming across many (if any) errors in the text or in the solutions. Perhaps the other reviewers who found lots of problems simply didn't understand how to arrive at the correct answer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent With a Few Flaws, January 5, 2002
By
Jared (Stanford, CA) - See all my reviews
The book is a decent first course on thermodynamics. My main issue with it was that most of the 'problems' were trivial exercises in algebra, although a few were worthwhile. Parts of the book were dull, but some sections were quite interesting. I found there to be fewer errors than some of the other reviews might lead you to believe.
