Book Description

5 and upK and up
There's a heat wave in Mud Flat, and temperatures and tempers are about to boil over. But can a lizard with a suitcase full of tricks make the rain he promises and save the day? The forecast calls for fun and there's plenty of it in Mud Flat!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2. The Mud Flat gang suffers through desert mirages, dripping ice-cream cones, and a rainmaking lizard before good weather?and good nature?are restored. The antics of the grumpy animals will bring a flood of smiles.

From Booklist

Ages 5^-7. A sequel to The Mud Flat Olympics (1994), this book consists of a series of scenes depicting the animal inhabitants of Mud Flat and a visiting rainmaker during a very hot, very dry period. Each chapter acts as a skit on paper, with its own situation, characters, and humor worked out in a double-page spread or two, separate and yet contributing to the whole. Stevenson's facility with line gives the book a lift that would be difficult to imitate successfully. The expressive line drawings, bright with colorful washes, create much of the humor through their depiction of characters and situations. Text and illustrations work together to an unusual degree, creating a book that has its own quirky wit. As welcome as rain in Mud Flat, this picture book will be a treat for Stevenson fans.
