The product comes completely disassembled and I recommend running through the parts list to ensure each piece is there, because mine contained the wrong pieces and I had to call the customer support number. Which I wanted to dock some stars for, but after a quick call to Heath's customer service I can't possibly drop the star rating. They were friendly fast and shipped the missing parts out right away. Wonderful when companies stand behind their products.

You will only need two tools to assemble this house (a Flat head screw driver, and some pliers) and several hours of free time.

The instructions for assembly are not the best but with some time and thought they can be figured out. I managed to build the entire thing by myself, but having a friend would make the assembly easier. At first I was worried about the sturdiness of the overall structure but with the addition of each element birdhouse grew more and more solid. Until the final result is a very durable, good looking martin house. Each floor is it's own unit and is held in place by a center piece that can be screwed down into the bird pole to remain in place. This makes for easy addition of more floors and cleaning, as you merely have to unscrew the centerpieces and slide them down the birdpole to gain access to the insides. The exception to this is the roof, which is attached to the top floor. Entry to these rooms is still possible as every SREH (starling resistant entrance hole) comes as a seperate piece which can be slid out to leave a square opening approximately 7 inches wide, more than enough room for your hand. Or after sliding the lower levels down, the floor pieces of each room can be snapped off in seconds for even faster cleaning.

According to many purple martin websites, the measured dimensions are (supposedly) the exact dimensions/size that purple martins look for when choosing a nesting site. As I got this martin house set up late in the season, I will have to wait till next year to see if it attracts purple martins. But apparently they like them, because I see one lucky reviewer already has purple martins. Can't wait for my own colony!

Nicely built, and appears it will be long-lasting. The purple martins took to it immediately... I'm going to buy a couple more.
