The Heath/Zenith SL-4300 motion activated light is perfect for front or back covered entries. The light itself is well constructed and relatively easy to install.

The only gotcha is with the bolts that go into the mounting plate -- they seemed to be too short to attach the the base. I replaced these screws with 3", #10 stainless steel screws + wing nuts to make mounting the base easier -- then cut the screws to length to accommodate the motion sensor shield.

Note: the dimmer/motion detector does not work with CFLs.

Pro: Fixture is attractive and well made....Accent lighting feature is nice for some applications.
Con: "The sensor is less sensitive to motion directly
towards it and more sensitive to motion across
coverage area." that is a quote from the user manual; but in my case neither of two units would actuate when approached in a radial direction, even with the sesitivity control set to "max".
I have a covered porch with the light fixture in the center of the ceiling; the walkway to approach the porch would have you walk towards the light fixture; in this case, the light does not go "on" until you are on the porch and directly under the fixture....
No good for me.... sending it back.

The automatic function of the light works well. The light is installed easily and is not heavy. The downside is that the light takes four 25w type B bulbs and includes a warning something to the effect... do not exceed 25w bulbs to reduce the risk of fire.

Our porch is definitely much dimmer at night with this light, compared to the old light that took two 100w bulbs, but I'm willing to sacrifice the brightness for the automatic feature.

Friend or foe, it is more attention getting to have a light turn on automatically.

It is also good for when you are on vacation. A porch light on all day every day for a week is pretty much a sign you are away.

We purchased this light as a replacement for the overhead light in our front walkway. The light looks great and the build quality is solid, but not stellar. It is good value for what it costs.

Be aware that it works with 4 candelabra base incandescent bulbs and not standard size light bulbs. This is not a huge issue, but the light output is limited by the low wattage of those bulbs. Also, the CFL versions of those bulbs that I tried just do not fit.

The big issue I am having is that our light is just not working properly. Sure it turns on and off, but the motion detection is not working at all. Now, in most cases i would just return the unit, but in this case, I have just spent 40 minutes removing the previous unit, finding the right hardware (the included screws were a bit short) and installing this light. That is a pretty serious time commitment for me to now reverse this process, remove the light and send it back. It is really too bad because i was excited about the motion detection feature.

Now based on the other reviews on Amazon, I may just have an odd, defective unit, but the reality is that there is nothing i can really do about it unless i want to spend more time on my ladder removing the defective light and sending it in for a replacement.

-sigh-

keep that in mind before you purchase.

I've had mine for a week now. The Dual-Brite Dimmer Control was confusing. It took a while to realize that this feature makes the light stay on (dim) constantly all night. When motion is detected, it switches from dim to full bright. I set this feature to "off". The candelabra lite bulbs at 25-watts each were a drawback (power consumption), but the motion-detection feature more than makes up for it. Would be great if I could find CFL (low-energy) bulbs that fit. Other than that, it's a handsome light that measures approximately 12" across. Heavy, due to the frosted glass dome. Connecting the wires was a snap, but getting the mounting screws to line up with the holes was a challenge. I would recommend.

This ceiling light is very sturdy and works as advertised. It does not take regular light bulbs though, you need four tiny candle lights.

The product works as should be but is somewhat difficult to calibrate for distant/angle activation. If you want less sensitivity for close to lamp activation, may not work as you want.

I have this installed at my front door and use the dim light option for when the full brightness isn't needed. Like typical motion detector units, it tends to work better detecting objects that move sideways thru its area than detecting objects moving towards it. However, it has not yet failed to turn on for a person coming up the walk before they reach the porch. It has adjustable sensitivity, which is good as i have it turned about 1/3 down so passing cars don't turn it on. For the dim light option, you can have it run for a period of time after darkness, or go for a total dusk to dawn, or no dim light at all. It uses candelabra bulbs, which seems a tad odd since you can't see the bulb through the frosted glass. LED bulbs for this size are still too pricey, and CFL's don't fit. The install wasn't too hard, it's attractive, and it works well. What's not to like?

A well crafted product - heavyweight. We installed in an entry-way that has very limited standing area, where there are also steps to a basement. Illuminates as soon as the entry-way door, or kitchen door, are opened. Would recommend this product to everyone.

Saw this same lamp at the major hardware chain store, but they only had it in the color white. Ugh. So we searched around and found it in "rust", which is actually an antique bronze / brown color.

We were replacing an existing light, so the mounting box, wires, etc. were already in place. Installation was a snap - all the parts were present (as they should be). The light works like it says - it has a low glow for 6 hours (this can be adjusted), then turns full on when something passes in it's path.

The light also comes with stickers to detune the sensitivity in one direction. This seems to be a problem for folks that have glass insert and side glass panels at their front door. We have both and found no problem with the light operation. Saving the stickers just in case...
