Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an anecdotal book, full of humor, full of the old ripsnorting rhetoric, full of comic exaggerations, and above all else full of gusto." -- Saturday Review

"In Heathen Days we find all of Mencken's strengths present and kicking." -- Brendan O'Donnell, Ex Libris

Book Description

In the second volume of his autobiography, Mencken recalls his early years as a reporter. Mencken learned his craft so well that by 1901 he became the Baltimore Morning Herald's Sunday editor and by 1906 was hired as an editor of the Baltimore Sun, where he quickly attracted a national following.

Format: Paperback
From Ungie Hornblower to nomination for the vice presidency, Mencken serves up autobiographical shorts that'll make you howl. Though he lived on Hollins Street for most of his life, his stories paint a full picture of "Charm City" from 1890-1936 (at least from the eyes of the most feared and respected critic of the time).

H. L. Mencken loved the passing parade, and this is a good sample of what he saw. We are treated to twenty episodes in his life, beginning in his childhood and extending through the mid 1930s. As you would expect, the prose sparkles and his stories are filled with humor. The book itself is beautifully printed with easily readable type. I have been reading a chapter a night to my wife so that we can both join in the fun.
