Wonderful synergy..., July 4, 2007

"Heaven and Earth" is a good album with some great moments. The opening notes of the first cut, "Kuivatusaluevalssi" (glad I just have to listen to it and not try to pronounce the name!) just about blew me off my seat. It remains my favorite cut. The drive, vitality, and energy of that performance is amazing -- plus, it's just a wonderfully cool tune. There are a few other cuts that are also great, but the first one set me up to have higher hopes of the album than it turned out to fulfil -- if all of their arrangements & tune choices had been as inspired as "Kuiva...", "Heaven and Earth" would be one of my favorite albums ever.
Another high point is the medley "Finistere/Quimper Gavotte/Walls of St. Malo," which is beautifully arranged and played. "Finistere" is a melancholy, sweet tune done with a lovely arrangement, and the "Quimper Gavotte" is another of those driving, dynamic tunes that seem to show Childsplay at their best -- and they wisely chose to have it in the middle of the medley and then come back to it at the end.
All in all, a very good album with some spots that will blow you away!
