First let me start by saying this review may be a little biased, as Type O Negative is my favorite band. There are, of course, similarities between Seventh Void and Type O. 3.0 out of 5 stars Its an ok rock album
Kenny Hickey's voice starts grating after a few songs, there's some cool tracks on it, so i listen to those and put it down again, not one to listen to start to finsh.

Give it a spin. Some cool doomy sounding stuff on there.

First let me start by saying this review may be a little biased, as Type O Negative is my favorite band. There are, of course, similarities between Seventh Void and Type O. The most prominent would be the sludgy Sabbath-like riffs and Kenny's familiar vocals. However, that is where the similarities end. You wont find the trademark lush melodies and organs/keys that make Type O Negative so distinct so I would recommend Type O Negative fans approaching this album with an open mind. I am not really a fan of the Doom Metal genre beyond bands like Tiamat or Type O, as I tend to like a lot of melody in my metal! However, this is a well made record. The riffs are not mindblowing, nor are the solos but Kenny & Co have made a good metal album full of tight grooves and the "doomiest" lyrics ever with themes that cover everything from suicide, drug abuse, the end of the world, and all things negative (sound familiar? ). The lyrics are not the most original but definitely fit the music. The only real complaint I have is Kenny's vocals. I think Kenny's high pitched yells are perfect in Type O and contrast well with Peter Steele's low baritone. Being that he is the lead singer in Seventh Void, he pretty much does nothing but yell in the exact same range in every song, which can be kind of grating to hear after a while. I would like to see more of a range in his vocal style on a later release. However, for a debut its pretty impressive considering his vocals are now taking center stage. Bottom line, if you like Type O I still totally recommend it for the obvious reasons. As far as the metal genre goes these days, there is a lot of cheesy stuff out there so this blows most mainstream metal out of the water. Seventh Void definitely channels that Brooklyn attitude the same way Type O Negative and Life of Agony have before. Fun release. Standout tracks include the title track, Descent, and Last Walk In The Light

Vinnie Paul did a great job signing and delivering us this album. Sure there is a lot of promotion focused on this record due to John and Kenny from Type O Negatie in it, but I heard this on XM prior to finding out who was in this band, and I already had made up my mind to get it. It has downtuned guitars, and many long instramental interludes that just pound the melody strait into your head. This is not just left over Type O songs, but are fresh sounding with a light sprinkle of the Drab Four. Standout tracks for me are Killing You Slow and Heavan Is Gone. Definately in the vein of Black Sabbath (like the into on the track Descent). Great addition for fans of Type O Negative, or fans of bands like The Sword or Black Sabbath.

Just picked this one up today and what a great side project from Kenny and Johnny of Type O Negative! Originally saw this album promoted by producer Vinny Paul on VH-1 That Metal Show with Eddie Trunk about a month ago and glad I did! What great sound production through Big Vin Records...much like the Rebel Meets Rebel quality! This effort certainly delivers an awesome dosage of power-punching Sabbath meets Type O doom-style riffs laced with top grunge era influences all tied into one giant dark void! Each track offers tremendous energy, maximum drive, and all are 10's in my book! Seventh Void "Heaven is Gone" rocks the proverbial Hell out of Heaven in 2009 and then some! Definitely pick this one up ASAP!

So I was attending a Static-X concert last night here in norfolk, when I looked to the stage and saw...Kenny and Johnny? I had no idea they had a band on the side of Type O called Seventh Void. They played a good show,I hadn't seen em since 99,World Coming Down tour, and I liked what I heard. If you're a Type O fan you should like this. There's no particular range to the song variations but it's a hell of alot better than crap like Hinder,Nickelback, or Papa Roach. Check this out if you're tired of bands that sound the same w/a POP-rock formula.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very solid and impressive!, April 25, 2009
This review is from: Heaven Is Gone (Audio CD)
I am a fan of Type O Negative. I don't think that should really matter, though, because these songs were not composed (or decomposed) by Peter Steele. That's his band, his riffs, his words. This is Kenny's band through and through. All those years of playing has to lead to some good writing, and this leads us to Seventh Void.

Now, I am a fan of Soundgarden. I mention this because there are some definite similarities between 7V and Soundgarden. Kenny's voice is similar to Chris Cornell's. A reviewer from above rated the album a 2 mostly because of Kenny's voice being a Cornell "ripoff". This is unfair. What's he supposed to do? Change his voice? Or was Vinnie Paul supposed to tell Kenny that he shouldn't be the lead vocalist of 7V because he sounds too much like Cornell? Is that what they told David Coverdale re: Robert Plant? Kenny's voice matches the music perfectly. With that said, Chris Cornell's voice fits Soundgarden's music perfectly. But remember listening to Audioslave? Good music, but the vocals got annoying after track #3. This is not the case with Seventh Void. Kenny isn't trying to outdo the rest of the band with his vocals a la Chris Cornell.

The tracks are solid all the way through. It's definitely a plug in your guitar and start jamming type of album. I'm not going to deny the influences either. Sabbath. Soundgarden. Chains. Even a little Led Zepp. The riffs jam like The Sword, but with superior vocalism (I do like The Sword, but some singing is nice too). Kenny Hickey's guitar playing is very recognizable. In Type O Negative, soloing is few-and-far-between. But when he did do a solo he pretty much shredded through it. His leads carry many of their songs. If you listen closely, he's not playing power chords all the way through. In fact, it's very technical (except on Slow, Deep and Hard). In 7V, his lead carries EVERY song and he finally gets to let out some of the long repressed feelings he seems to have held in for the last 20 years in Type O Negative (guitar-wise, that is).

I do have one problem, and I'm not usually one to pick on this. It is the labeling of the band as Doom Metal. For me, usually metal is metal. Hard rock is hard rock. Then you have the extremists who have to seperate black metal, death metal, sludge, doom, hard-core, stoner metal, etc. It's stupid. But Seventh Void is not doom metal. I think doom metal, I think My Dying Bride. There is no other band that expresses the term "doom metal" like MDB. Now, when you list all of 7V's influences, are any of those doom metal? No, and the music sounds nothing like that. In fact, 7V would have been more popular 15 years ago during the grunge heyday. This music isn't grunge, but it's influenced by them. One last bit of information: I've met Kenny Hickey 3x. My favorite was in a music store back in 2004. We talked for awhile and on his way out, he had some concert DVD's he was buying. I was quite surprised to see he had 2 Rage Against The Machine DVDs and a Soundgarden DVD. He said, and I quote, "I Love Rage". So, there you have it. No doom metal. But, METAL. Through and through.

Suggestion: listen to the title track. If you like that song, you'll like the whole album. My guess is that if you've read this review all the way through, you'll like Heaven Is Gone. BTW, my favorite band is Opeth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Own Sound, November 10, 2011

In my opinion, this is definitely not the same as Type O Negative, regardless what some other reviewers have noted. This is a very powerful production that Johnny and Kenny can call their own. Peter is gone, along with the unique stamp that he put on Type O's music, and that's sad, but good music stands on its own - I would have to say that this Seventh Void album is excellent music that Type O fans will most likely rate high. I would also recommend it to anyone who appreciates good, old-fashioned, hard rock in the vein of Sabbath and early Testament. No rap or gargling to distract from the creative, heavy progressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Sludgy, Grunge-ish Southern-ish Doom..., August 13, 2010

This review is from: Heaven Is Gone (Audio CD)
eh whatever... This is good stuff!! It's Kenny and Johnny from Type O!! If you need to know more it's as the title states. If you like this kind of music you're gonna dig it... If you like Type O, you MIGHT like it, as this sounds NOTHING LIKE TYPE O NEGATIVE and I would think maybe that Type O negative fans may be of a divided population; Goths, Rockers and Metalheads. Do not listen to the reviewer who said that this record sounds like a Type O record, he is obviously high or just making this up... It's kinda like SOUNDGARDEN meets CROWBAR if I could describe it... You can hear Kenny singing like this as background vocals on Type O records all the time, so it's not a big shocker on his vocal capabilities, the man can wail!! Type O's main man Pete Steele was the focal point of Type O negative, his singing and his tone, nobody will ever be able to duplicate the sound of his vocals or bass... RIP, he will be greatly missed and in my opinion should have received more credit and acclaim... But anyone who called themselves a Type O Negative fan should know that all of those guys had good taste in music and need to hunt this down and buy it, 2/4ths of Type O has put out a bad ass record that is seriously rockin'!!!
