Book Description

March 16, 1995
Nantucket's Lizzie Robinson was a little too wild even for a young girl. Then she returns from Boston, a mature lady now called Elizabeth, and Tavis, the most eligible bachelor on the island, who used to think her an imp, now sees the woman she has grown into. But they are forced to marry too soon, and Tavis abandons her on her wedding night. Elizabeth is confused and distraught, not realizing that even bitterness can change back into love, sometimes....

From Publishers Weekly

In the finale to a series of well-received books about the five Mackinnon brothers from Texas ( So This Is Love ), full-bodied prose sleekly captures the story of irrepressible Lizzie Robinson and her love for rakish bachelor Tavis Mackinnon. To the amusement of Nantucket's residents and to the consternation of her family, Lizzie sets her cap to Tavis and is consequently packed off to a stern Boston aunt to curb her wild ways. Civilized and refined, Elizabeth returns nine years later--still besotted. Tavis vows to resist, but finds himself drawn to the woman she has become. With the Civil War looming, Tavis and Elizabeth take to the seas in hot pursuit of a Confederate spy. Imperiled, rescued and forced to wed (nature having taken its course after they were blown off theirs), the lovers are buffeted by wartime separation and their own wills until hard-won maturity prevails. Streamlined to focus on the stormy, emotionally complex dynamic between Elizabeth and Tavis, the high-spiritedness of the early narrative gives way to an increasingly somber tone that becomes lugubrious with heavy-handed depictions of loss and random tragedy. Coffman's writing is deft, capable and evocative yet underplays the sweep and vibrancy of the era, and, save for Elizabeth's beloved seafaring old salt of a grandfather, ancillary characters are shadowy blips. Uneven overall, but for the last of the Mackinnons, Coffman has crafted a smoothly milled romance that fans of the series will no doubt find satisfying.

From the Publisher

As an editor, you're not really supposed to play favorities. But of all the wonderful historical romances written by Elaine Coffman, HEAVEN KNOWS is one of my all-time keepers. While reading the manuscript, I fell immediately in love with the pre-teen Lizzie stuffing her bodice and tripping over herself to try to get handsome, older man Tavis Mackinnon to notice her. And, of course, Lizzie has her revenge when ten years later Tavis winds up chasing her. Many books cross my desk but this one still stands out years later.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my style, April 15, 2000
By
I have a feeling other people will enjoy this book more than I, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2. I read ANGEL IN MARBLE and was really impressed by it, couldn't wait to read Tavis' story. I should have just been satisfied with what I got and not asked for more.

I never cared for these characters. Lizzie was madly in love with Tavis, for no good reason other than a childhood fantasy. He spends a good deal of the book disliking her. We never see a side of Tavis that makes him worthy of this devotion. He's pig-headed, none too kind, lacking in compassion and generally undeserving of her obsession. The most well-rounded character in the novel was Lizzie's grandfather.

Another thing I did not appreciate about this book was the vast amounts of time the h & h spent apart. In my opinion, a romance should be centered around the development of the relationship between the hero and heroine, not all the things they're thinking of each other or doing while they're apart. It detracts from romantic and sexual tension. There was also a very heavy reliance by Ms. Coffman on quotes, homilies and bits of wisdom. So much so that it became a distraction, some of them didn't even feel appropriate to the scene.

I can't recommend his book because I did not enjoy it, but I have a feeling this style of writing might appeal to the reader who likes sweet books that are light on motivation or appreciable conflict. I will choose to believe that Ms. Coffman just ran out of steam on this 5th book of the series and give her another shot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why?, February 5, 2000
By A Customer
The book was good and all, but why does it always have to be the heroine that constantly has to grovel at the hero's feet and ask for a shred of feeling from him? And the hero wouldn't have, exactly, liked the heroine after she returned from Boston if she hadn't turned out to be a good-looking chick. Besides that, the book was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!, July 6, 2000
Every page of this book is a delight. I've been a fan of Elaine Coffman for years, and the Mackinnon books are treasured. This book has wonderful humor without being silly, and the emotions are heartfelt. I don't know when I've laughed and cried so much with a book, and Lizzie Robinson is one delightful heroine I'll never forget. She reminds me of Ann of Green Gables. Ms. Coffman develops her characters until its hard to believe they only exist on paper. Every woman remembers her first love, and this book is guaranteed to make you remember yours. Pure delight!
