something more than just a cookbook,
By
This review is from: Heaven Knows What (Llewellyn's Popular Astrology) (Paperback)
You will find a lot of delineations in this book: all aspects and sun-moon combinations are reviewed. But Lewi Grant goes further. He modifies his delineations according to other aspects that can be found in the natal chart. A venus-jupiter conjunction in your radix will differ if your chart has a venus-mars trine as well or a venus-mars conjunction. This is just not a textbook about two planets in aspect, but about different planets in aspect. That's the way delineations should be handled: all aspects are to be seen and interpreted as a chain. Only Lewi Grant seems to understand this....

Classic astrology reference that has stood the test of time,
This review is from: Heaven Knows What (Llewellyn's Popular Astrology) (Paperback)
Grant Lewi is probably the greatest astrology author who ever lived. His two best sellers, Heaven Knows What and Astrology for the Millions, were printed in mid-century yet aren't the least bit outdated. They remain two of the best astrology books in existence. In Heaven Knows What, Lewi does a page on every possible Sun-Moon combination, explaining how an Aries with an Aries moon differs from an Aries with a Taurus moon, etc. His readings are obviously built on his personal observations, not just on theories about what the signs are supposed to be like. They are very unique. The back section of the book explains natal aspects (Sun conjunct Mercury, etc.). As for his quick horoscope calculations, I just ignore them. If you want your chart done, get your chart done.In Astrology for the Millions, Lewi goes the more traditional route, explaining the effect of the Sun, Moon and planets in all of the signs. His unique style shines through, and he is right on target, which is why he is the best there ever was. If all astrologers were as good as Grant Lewi was, the field of astrology would be a respected field instead of being considered by most as a pseudo-science.

Excellent for the beginner,
This review is from: Heaven Knows What (Llewellyn's Popular Astrology) (Paperback)
The steps in the book are straight forward and extremely easy to follow. You can start doing a horoscope almost right away, and you don't need to know anything about horoscopes to do it. The resulting horoscopes from this book tend to be in detail and accurate. Horoscopes out of a newspaper are no comparison to what you'll come up with. The process of creating a horoscope with this book takes a minimal amount of time. I recommend this book for anybody interested in horoscopes.

Simply the best astrology book ever,

Grant Lewi Taught at Princeton. This was a brilliant man who devoted his life to finding the essential truths of astrology - in a time of great antipathy towards the practice. As a professional astrologer, I HIGHLY recommend this book for personal growth. I use it with every chart reading I do.

Flawed Editions,
This review is from: Heaven Knows What (Llewellyn's Popular Astrology) (Paperback)
Only the Eleventh Edition (1998) has the blue and yellow sunburst cover being shown.
Tenth and Ninth editions, 1994 and 1990, have the "gold" cover. All three editions have the same ISBN. Too bad! The ninth edition has tables to only 1999 --- not too useful in 2011. The tenth edition has tables up to 2050, that much is good; unfortunately the instructions on how to use the tables has errors! Also the Horoscope Blank has one misprint (for the Saturn in the same space with Pluto reference). The ELEVENTH EDITION, the one pictured, is a "finished and correct" product. The 9th- and 10th- editions are transitional and they show it.

Astrology is a hard science to master, which is why this book is so brilliant. Grant Lewi takes a number of complex astrological concepts and converts them into something which is usable by, and useful to, the layman.Even if you know nothing about astrology, you could construct your own chart in less than 30 minutes . This book is not 100% accurate as it only takes into consideration major aspects such as the trine, sextile, opposition. square or conjunction .Also ,the moon positions might not be completely accurate. For eg. 23 january 1985 says moon in aquarius while a person born on that day might have a moon in pisces owing to latitude differences .However, the fact remains that this is an excellent start for those who want to know more about astrology considering it has tables from the year 1870 to 2050 as well as 277 aspects.

The hard part of astrology is synthesizing the parts into an interpretation that fits the person. You can endlessly look up what the sun means in various signs, versus what the moon means in various signs, and try to combine the readings. Until you see Grant Lewi's interpretations of every possible sun-moon combination, you can never really be sure you know what you are doing. This book, in conjunction with Lewi's "Astrology for the Millions," should be the basis of any astrologer's education. "Heaven Knows What" covers planets in aspect; "Astrology for the Millions" covers planets in signs.

This book is a do-it-yourself horoscope kit for lay persons, and no knowledge of astrology is required. Although the book was written about 1935, its publication date stands as proof and testiment, of what a good astrologer can glean from, an individual's natal chart. This is written by one of America's best astrologers, the late Grant Lewi, and although these horoscopes, can be said to be over 60 years old, they are accurate today, and will be tomorrow. If you are only interested in finding out about your own horoscope, or a few of you family or friends, this is the book to try. It will probably make you a believer in astrology, in you are not now. . . and it may spark your interest in learning more about the subject of Astrology, as it did mine. smittydeoakley@hotmail.com

Heaven Really Knows.....!,

Don't use this book to cast the horoscope - use a computer program like "Astrolog" which you can easily download for free off the net (it's freeware). Use that or one of the other books (like Parkers) to do the actual casting then USE THIS FOR INTERPRETATION! If you have an accurately cast horoscope this book is extremely scary in it's accuracy. The sun/moon profiles are absolutely spot on (not one person I have met is wrong and that is saying something.) I've been studying astrology for about 30 years now and use this and Parkers for most of my interpretations (there are a couple of other books I use as well). What is good about this is Lewi gives you a base profile and layers all the modifications based on an individuals chart. So it's best to write the sun/moon combination and then all the aspects and interlink them together to get a full profile - that is the real power of this book - interlinking all the aspects with the sun/moon to get a full profile, which soon becomes individual as the person you are studying. Ascendants and houses are not covered and is really the only weakness, as that is the final layer on what is a complex subject. However (remember this is for begginners) and if you know someone 80% then that is pretty good. Hint: go for the later editions as they also cover aspects to Pluto.
