Editorial Reviews

Five Finger Death Punch didn't take the easy road on their fourth and fifth albums, The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell Vol. 1 & 2 [Prospect Park/EMI]. The gold-selling, chart-topping Las Vegas quintet Ivan Moody [vocals], Zoltan Bathory [guitar], Jeremy Spencer [drums], Jason Hook [guitar], and Chris Kael [bass] fire off their most enigmatic, engaging, and empowering salvos yet. Open up your mind, raise your fist, and dive into The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell Vol. 1. Includes second disc with 15 live tracks and coupon for online redemption of a FREE t-shirt!

2013's The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell Vol. 1 is the fourth full-length studio album by the American Metal band Five Finger Death Punch; It was produced by Kevin Churko (who produced and played bass on their third album, American Capitalist) and as its name implies is one part of a two album set, with part two set to be released separately afterwards.

Five Finger Death Punch aren't a band for elitists, they aren't a band for snobs. If you've ever insulted a band for being `posers' or `mallcore' or criticized a band for its image rather than its music then they are definitely something you should avoid.

What they specialize in is simple, memorable and catchy Metal that is entertaining and enjoyable. They walk a fine line between being too heavy for the radio and yet too light for underground credibility. Equally some of their song titles, lyrics, stage banter and merchandise isn't always the most tasteful and artistic in the world but they know what they are doing musically. The band know how to write good songs, filled with crunchy riffs, great solos, vocal parts you can sing along with and melodies that get stuck in your head for days.

The direction of their sound is a sort of clean, crisp and deceptively heavy mixture between Hard Rock, the less Grungey or Industrial sides of Alternative Metal and those occasional commercial radio-Metal singles by heavier bands. Imagine a mixture between Vulgar era Pantera, Vol. 3 era Slipknot and Indestructible era Disturbed and you'll get a vague ballpark idea of their sound.

This is another great 5FDP album, and it has shattered all of my expectations. Every song is strong enough to stand on its own as a single, yet they blend perfectly into a dozen track procession into hell and back. "Wrong Side of Heaven" is rightfully the title track with its powerful chorus and moody yet thoughtful lyrics. "Anywhere but Here" featuring the lovely Maria Brink, is another standout track, while 5DP's cover of "Momma said Knock You Out" will have you thinking that LL Cool J's classic was meant to be a metal song all along. Easily the most balanced album they have ever created, with "Burn MF" "You", and "Dot Your Eyes" forming the angry core while melodic tracks like the ballad "M.I.N.E" give it an outside appeal. All in all, an excellent offering, and a must have for all Knuckleheads!

There old sound is coming back on this album in my opinion, which is good because I loved their self titled and War is the answer. My only gripe with this album is that some of the songs I feel like I heard before only with different lyrics. Overall though it is still head bangin worthy.

Before I get into this, please know that I am a fan of this band, and have been since The Way of The Fist and Even Ivans' days in the awesome MOTOGRATER.... That being said, this hotly anticipated album fell far short of my expectations. The passion of the lyrics are gone and replaced with curse-laden drivel and nonsense. I like hearing cussing in my Metal but when it is done right, this is ALMOST dabbling into LIMP BIZKIT territory when it comes to Ivans' use of the F Bomb.....It is ridiculous, and kills the whole vibe of the album for me. The other 3 albums all had songs that lifted me up through dark times and after 4 listens of this cd, I feel nothing but disappointment and possibly a lower IQ. I get why people like it so much, I really do. American ears have been desensitized to ridiculous money hungry attempts where the band just gives up and rakes in all the cash while you bang your head and think you're cool for listening to a "heavy" band. This band had the chance to reach Slipknot style Mainstream success but after this, I truly don't think they have the songs or the desire to do so. Slipknot stayed heavy while going mainstream, this garbage is just noise that sounds like it was written by a pissed off 15 yr old in his mommy's basement. The music here is solid but nothing stands out for me. This band is too talented to release such a slap in the face but that's the way the business goes. At least we got 3 awesome, uplifting, powerful albums from these guys. Sorry if this review makes you angry, but it's just how I feel. I wanted to like it, but I can't. And by the way, the guest appearances are not needed, and truly doesn't add much to the album. Rob Halford kills on here and Maria Brink is ok, but other than those 2 it is just disappointment song after song. I hope they step up their game next time around ESPECIALLY LYRICALLY or this will be the end for one of the best Modern Metal bands of this generation

I will not apologize for liking 5FDP. At the incredibly advanced age of 53, yes, 53, I still like metal better than any other popular music form, although I listen to a huge variety of stuff except for country, opera or rap and hip hop. The thing is, metal, when done properly, is the last bastion of the rebellion and individualism that defined rock and roll in the first place. Without that component, the music can still rock and still be enjoyed, but it will lack a certain amount of raw energy and emotion.
"The Wrong Side of Heaven" is a big improvement for the DP'rs, where the first three, while slamming efforts and worthy of your dollar, tended to be a bit formulaic, rough punchy verses and softer choruses. This album doesn't let up steam during the sing alongs, and it rocks harder for it. No less a metal god and legend than Rob Halford shares vocals with Ivan Moody on opening track "Lift Me Up". If Rob ever tired of Priest again, and Moody left 5FDP, he would be a perfect fit, as the two vocalists tag team to a furious hook and beat, setting the tone for an angry defiant album worthy of the heaviest Pantera.
The production this time is gigantic. Kevin Churko, former 5FDP bassist, produces the album and because of his work with the band, he understands exactly what they need: huge drums, maybe the best drum sound out there right now, fat but crisp guitars and an overall sound that pummels without becoming muddy. In fact, Jeremy Spencer's drums are the driving force, wisely keeping blast beats to a minimum and employing a solid fist pumping 4/4 beat that allows you to head bang without losing the drive of the tune, something far too many blast beaters out there simply do not understand.
