5.0 out of 5 stars Heaven Shall Burn...By the Hands of MARDUK !, January 21, 2008
This review is from: Heaven Shall Burn When We Are Gathered (Audio CD)
A Masterpiece by the demons of Marduk. Non stop blast beats, shredding guitar and insane vocal performance by Legion, Marduk's original, and much better, singer before Mortuus joined. This album has everything needed to be a perfect black metal album. The guitar playing, the vocals, the outstanding drum work and songs that stand out. This album never lets up and never has you reaching to change the song. If youre looking for a flawless black metal album by an awesome band, search no further. This is probably Marduk's finest work, although Dark Endless, Those of the Unlight and Opus Nocturne are really good too. This is deffinitly not a band any real black metal fan should pass up, they are quite high on my list for Greatest Black Metal Bands of All Time.

Faster and heavier than their 3 predecessors and incorporating the infamous Erik ¨Legion¨ Hägsted as the new official vocalist, this album marks a turn in direction for the mighty kings of swedish Black Metal. Still not as blast-beat happy as albums to come -and certainly miles away from their ¨Panzer division¨ album- this one is much more agressive while still retaining some interesting melodic lines and a very dark and opressive atmosphere.

The production, on the other hand and despite the remastering, detracts a lot from the enjoyment. By far the worst sounding and mixed Marduk album; the takes on the drums are weak and muddled, making for a confusing overall sound. Guitar tone doesn't shred all the time becoming lower in the mix on certain songs, esp. during tremolo picking, taking away some of the power this band is reknownwed for.

The disc clocks in at a meager 35' and has some 20' worth of live tracks which are sonically unlistenable .

All in all a good effort, I liked it in spite of the poor production but it's not the milestone some fans will want you to believe it is. Get any previous cds like the incredible ¨Those Of The Unlight¨ first.
