4.0 out of 5 stars 4 star soundtrack for 5 star film, July 6, 2002
By
This review is from: Heavenly Creatures (Audio CD)
Peter Dasent's original score to Heavenly Creatures (his third and last collaboration with Peter Jackson so far) gives one mixed feelings. At times, the soundtrack is very beautiful and the themes are played out nicely, but at other times the music can seem very 'cheesy' with simple synthesizer tunes. However, the non-original music that was put into this film is entirely brilliant. The five songs on this soundtrack performed by Mario Lanza emphasize both the tones of scenes, and also the girls' intense fanaticism of Mario Lanza. These Lanza songs are some that were actually indicated in Pauline Parker's diaries, which is just another reminder of the in-depth research by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, resultiing in a fabulous film. The Humming Chorus by Giacomo Puccini (performed by the Hungarian State Opera) on the Heavenly Creatures soundtrack is enough to make one buy the cd! Its slow, innocent beauty is used excellently with some irony in the brilliant last scene of the film. This music lets you relive the power of Heavenly Creatures while living in your own "Fourth World".

4.0 out of 5 stars The Heavenly Creatures OST, February 8, 2009
I fully admit, in fact I'm proud to say I bought this OST because of Kate Winslet's involvement. This is the soundtrack for her first film and I bought it because sings on it. The album itself is incidental music and the light opera- mostly Mario Lanza- that the girls in the film obsess over (when they are not obsessing over themselves). If you love the film and/or Kate Winslet (guilty on both counts) you will find this OST indispensable. If there was no involvement of Kate or if it was just an album of Mario Lanza I would not have been interested but listening to the music gives you a flavour of the bizarre and intriguing experience you have when you watch the film, which was also, of course, Peter 'Lord Of The Rings' Jackson's debut.
