5.0 out of 5 stars Mathis at his best and most "romantic", January 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Heavenly (Audio CD)
This was one of my mother's favorite LPs and during my highschool and college years I borrowed it often as it became the "soundtrack" for many dates and romantic evenings. Here we have Mathis in 1958 when he was at his vocal and artistic peak. Glenn Osser provides the wonderful arrangements for these twelve numbers that beautifully compliment Mathis's flawless delivery. There isn't a bad number in the bunch and some of the lesser known titles provide the real highlights such as "They Say It's Wonderful", "I'll Be Easy To Find", and "That's All". It's all an unabashedly romantic affair but who cares. Fire it up while relaxing with your better half and enjoy as the fireworks start.

I also agree with the reviewer from Michigan... when I moved out and picked up my own copy of this LP it came as a double with the other Osser-arranged 1960 LP "Faithfully" which contained similar type numbers/arrangements. Considering the length of these LPs Sony/CBS could easily have put them on a single extended length CD... as a matter of fact at one point it was issued as a double length cassette. So let's get to it guys... if not at least reissue "Faithfully" as soon as humanly possible.

(For folks who care the "Faithfully" release contained :Faithfully; Tonight; Nobody Knows (How Much I Love You); One Starry Night; Follow Me; You Better Go Now; Secret Love; Maria; Where Do You Think You're Going; And This Is My Beloved; and Where Are You? If you like "Heavenly", write to Sony and tell them to restore this classic as well.)

Having listened to the Maestro of romance since the 60's, I found the quality of this album superb! I have most of his cd's and never tire of listening to them

For instance the main title 'Heavenly' on this cd sent my heart racing. 'More Than You Know' when he hits that hight note sliding up and down in an effortless musical embrace had me racing for Click button to buy this album.

I DO RECOMMEND ANY JOHNNY MATHIS DEVOTEE TO ADD THIS TO THEIR COLLECTION OR START ONE!!

Yes, this is a masterpiece album. Maybe Johnny's greatest. But I agree with the other reviewer who says where is FAITHFULLY, and even more so, his other great masterpiece album RAPTURE. What is wrong with Sony/Columbia? Do they ever use their heads? I guess they are holding it out till some date in the future just to keep us on tenderhooks. I have HEAVENLY, FAITHFULLY, and RAPTURE on LPs., thank God. When will Sony wake up?

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection, December 22, 1999

I first came across this recording as an album when I was a pre-teenager. I sang all the songs and all the beautiful obscure verses that went with them. I thought back then that "I'll Be Easy to Find" was one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard and I stll think that today some forty years later. It is a beautiful lush romantic album and Mathis' voice is perfection.

FAITHFULLY: How about having this Mathis masterpiece on CD? I've lived with HEAVENLY since 1959. Why not having the second part of this album on CD?

This is a beautiful CD...I have worn out many copies of this in vinyl. Now....If only Columbia would issue "Faithfully" on CD, I could die happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The dictionary definition of "romantic", December 20, 2000

This is the most romantic album I've ever heard. Nothing else comes close. Sit and listen to it with someone you love; that's all you have to do -- Mathis all but dims the lights and removes your clothes for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Single Song is "Heavenly", September 24, 2001

Every single song in the album "Heavenly" is just -- what else can I say -- Heavenly. I listen to this CD every day and just can't get enough of hearing it. Johnny Mathis's voice is so very smooth and glorious.

I have many albums of his, but somehow I think this is his very best, at least one of his very best and would recommend it to anyone who really loves beautiful songs with a beautiful voice to sing them.

I hope Johnny Mathis never stops singing because he has been blessed with such a voice, as is reflected in "Heavenly"

Johnny Mathis possesses a rare talent to use his uniquely wonderful vocal skills to create a masterpiece out of nearly any ballad ever written. This album features a beautiful set of twelve of Johnny's most romantic numbers.
The track set begins with "Heavenly." The title track boasts an excellent arrangement for both the strings and the piano; Johnny celebrates his affection for his one true love and he handles the subtle tempo changes like a pro! "Hello, Young Lovers" starts with a musical flourish from the strings, harp and flute; Johnny's voice never sounded better as he croons this timeless ballad from The King And I. Johnny also delivers "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening" with panache and sensitivity.

"A Ride On A Rainbow" gets another beautiful arrangement for the strings as Johnny Mathis sings of how wonderful it is to spend time with his one true love; and Johnny delivers "Something I Dreamed Last Night" to perfection.

"Misty" is a highlight of this album; Johnny sings this without a superfluous note and the number has a stunning arrangement for the piano and strings as well. "Stranger In Paradise" gives us a second highlight from this CD; Johnny sings a rarely heard opening verse and when he begins to perform the actual song this number truly takes flight! Johnny also delivers "They Say It's Wonderful" as only he could.

"I'll Be Easy To Find" sports a hauntingly beautiful melody as Johnny Mathis sings passionately of how he wants to fall in love.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and the final track on this CD is "That's All." Johnny performs "That's All" with care and great sensitivity. He truly renders "That's All" a love song all his own using his singularly beautiful interpretation of this classic ballad.

Johnny Mathis continues to perform and entertain countless numbers of people; and we are all better off for it. With any luck, Johnny Mathis will continue to sing as only he can for many, many years to come.

Enjoy!

My CD "Heavenly" by Johnny Mathis is just what I expected. I purchased the original LP more than 30 years ago. The CD was easily identifiable because its cover is exactly the same as the one that the LP had.
