Too good not to be on DVD.,
This review is from: Heavenly Kid [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Despite being crippled by a low budget and a wretched soundtrack that makes you want to ram tree branches into your ears this film won me over with its charm.
Bobby is a cool Fonz-style greaser who dies in a racing accident sometime around 1968. Once in the afterlife he's is informed that he cannot get into Heaven unless he accomplishes an assignment. Bobby agrees and 17 years later he returns in Ft. Lauderdale assigned to help a "spazolla" named Lenny. Kinda sounds like an episode of "Highway to Heaven" doesn't it? Filled with funny moments, a good story and some unbelievably bad clothes this is a great 80's time capsule that the entire family can enjoy. My favorite moment is right after his makeover when he goes out trying to impress girls. God, I laughed for two minutes when he shot those cigarettes across the room.

Heartwarming unique comedy!,

This is really cute movie,if you enjoy movies dealing with the aftelife and loved ones who have passed coming back to help their family you can't miss this! I was a 12 year old extra when they filmed Heavenly Kid in Atlanta GA in 1984 at Stone Mountain and the Marta station, my sister also worked as a stand in for the lead actress.I thought Lewis Smith was so cute! I appear in the uncut TV version , that has alot of extra footage the new DVD version didn't include. The story begins in the early 1960's when a young handsome rebel named "Bobby" dies in a drag raceing accident.Bobby's girlfriend cries as she watches helplessly as his car crashes over a cliff.. Because Bobby didn't live a perfect life he must complete an assignment before he can go to "up town" (heaven), Bobby is sent back to the 80's to help a akward teen named "Lenny" cope with high school bullies and growing up, Bobby later finds out the teen is his own son.Bobby has a few culture shocks seeing how the times have changed since he was a teen in the early 60's, he also is crushed to find out his girlfriend has married his old rival and the story takes a bit of a romantic turn like in the movie "Ghost".There are also a few heartwarming and funny moments in this film with a wonderful Happy ending everyone will love! Lewis Smith is a wonderful actor, I remember he was friendly to everyone on the set, and later appeared in the movie "North and South" and "Wyatt Earp" etc.. I heard he is now a actting teacher. Why don't they release the uncut TV version of Heavenly Kid on DVD? There are quiet a few extra sceens that are completely left out of the new dvd version.

I first watched this movie back in high school and I watch it at least once a year or every time I see it come on tv. I'm so glad that it's now available on DVD because I've watched it so much that my VHS tape is so worn out by now!! I think the story and the surprises in this movie are fantastic. I just want to say to others that have written a review on this movie, please DO NOT tell the entire story for those that haven't had the opportunity to see it. When you tell all the secrets of the movie it spoils it for a first timer! Everyone knows that. Entice the people to buy it and let them enjoy it like we did :)

This is one of those movies that makes me say - i love the 80's. Is funny and overall with a good story, and also it has a great soundtrack. Is one of the few movies that pretty much everyone in the family can watch. I loved it from the very first time I watch it, and I know you will like it too.

A Heavenly Movie...,

I loved this movie as a kid back in the 80's. When I found it on DVD, I couldn't have been more ecstatic. This is a wonderfully cheesy 80's movie. I'm so happy to see that so many other people treasure The Heavenly Kid as much as I do. If you've never heard of it, it's about a cool guy who dies while racing his car off a cliff. He gets sent back to earth after some time to help out a "spazola" of a kid who is actually his son and helps the kid to be cool. If it sounds cheesy, well, it is. But it's got that kind of cheese that could only ferment from the early 80's. There are a couple things you could nitpick at such as when the motorcycle guy tells Lewis Smith's character that they're in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I live in Ft. Lauderdale and have my entire life and I've never seen a cliff. But hey, that's just overanalyzing. That would be my only complaint. This movie will make you feel good all over and cause you to consider that perhaps someone you've loved and lost is looking over you today.
