4.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly Toast on the Paradise Road - excellent variety!, June 20, 2000
First off...if you only know Nigel through Bush and expect HT to sound remotely like his band...you'll be surprised.

I could tell by listening that Heavenly Toast is a compilation of sorts from songs written and performed at different times, though this fact doesn't take anything away from the album as a whole. It reminds me of the "demo tapes" a lot of budding songwriters make, of melodies and beats inspired by different things and almost haphazardly pasted together. Only Nigel's musical talent is obviously well more along than any budding songwriters.

The album carries the listener through everything from dark, dank riffs and threatening lyrics to a humerous tribute to the Pixies. Nigel Pulsford's musical range is impressive - his album covers many genres yet does them all quite well.

My personal favorite is Youth Is All the Rage, for a number of reasons. For one, it's probably the most radio-friendly of the album (not like that's always a great thing), and it's also an honest, only halfway joking portrayal of a "generation x" that seems to cover today's teenagers through adults still trying to get used to adulthood. I personally also enjoyed the dulcimer and Jew's harp's appearances - they add an original flavor to a few of the album's songs, blending Nashville with "rock" quite satisfactorally.

All in all: a varied yet solid album that surprises and impresses with its originality. Mr. Pulsford should be congratulated - not many closet songwriters are bold (and talented) enough to release a successful album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes..more Heavenly Toast, please., June 19, 2000
Heavenly Toast on the Paradise Road, in my opinion, is the very opposite of Bush. Nigel Pulsford has mostly strayed away from his hard edgy sounds that you're used to hearing from him on Bush albums. Not that he doesn't entirely leave it off of his record..because he doesn't. As a great example in the song, 'Uncle Joe Stole My Girl', a perfect song filled with just guitars. Very excellent music. Just don't be looking for the next Bush album. This cd is varied in it's sounds and styles, which I like very much. On this record, Nigel was able to go on another creative level with Heavenly Toast. Such as the very diverse sounds of 'Love is Dying While Washing is Drying', which features a Jews Harp played by David Schnaufer. (Now that's def. not Bush!) and 'October', an instrumental song with the piano. Very beautiful and peaceful song.'Heavenly Toast',which is track #11, has some amazing lyrics which will keep you thinking. With the #3 track, Nigel has captured the whole cd with 'Youth is All the Rage'. He describes the times of youth trying to become adults in this world. And that's my opinion of the song and my favorite off of the album. And the closing song, 'Sounds Like', which features the lovely vocals of Nigel's wife, Judith Rose... in which she seems to love The Pixies.. :)The album leaves the listener feeling happy and yet still thinking of Nigel's deeply thoughtful and descritive lyrics. If you love Bush as much as I do, and love the members.. then go check out 'Heavenly Toast'.. **Lastly I want to thank Nigel for making this cd... and Jan for keeping the Heavenly Toast list going smoothly.** :)
