Another Fine Bluegrass Gospel Album,
By
This review is from: Heavenly Treasures (Audio CD)
Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver since its inception in 1980 (following Lawson's 8-year tenure with the Country Gentlemen) alternated between secular and gospel bluegrass. While they certainly could play traditional bluegrass (listen to their haunting rendition of Carter Stanley's "The Lonesome River" from 1982's RIDES AGAIN!), they could turn around and put a bluegrass spin on Christie's pop hit "Yellow River" (from the same album). However, the band really shines on their gospel albums, and HEAVENLY TREASURES has all the ingredients of their previous all-gospel album ROCK MY SOUL.HEAVENLY TEASURES features stellar playing from Lawson (mandolin), Terry Baucom (banjo), Jimmy Haley (guitar), and newcomer Randy Graham (replacing founding member Lou Reid on bass). Then there are the wonderful four-part harmonies, used to wonderful effect especially on the a capella numbers "I Dreamed of a Great Judgment Morning," "My Rock," and "Jezebel." Other highlights include "Gone Away," "Lay Your Burdens at the Feet of Jesus," and "Jesus Walked on Water." Mike Auldridge also guests on two tracks playing pedal steel: "Too Much to Gain to Lose" and "God Sent an Angel." Fans of bluegrass gospel will find much to enjoy here. If there is any criticism, it's the short playing time--barely thirty minutes. It would have been nice to have HEAVENLY TREASURES and ROCK MY SOUL released as a two-fer. [Running Time - 30:13] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
