5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous pictures, personal text, wonderful scenery,, November 25, 2009
This review is from: Heaven's Window: A Journey Through Northern New Me (Crossroads) (Hardcover)
Jack Parson took some wonderful photographs and Michael Wallis added some interesting, personal reactions to some of the most beautiful parts of New Mexico. Several of the photos appear on Parson's website, and this is one of Wallis's first books -- he has now written ten, all on the West, including Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride and Route 66: The Mother Road 75th Anniversary Edition.

Wallis's text has an autobiographical quality to it: "I stalked the mountains -- the Sandias, the Jemez and the Sangre de Cristos. I fished the Pecos and damn near died in untamed parts of the Rio Grande. I found eagle feathers and fresh cougar tracks. I watched black bears silently pad down Santa Fe streets in search of a cool drink of water. I became acquainted with magpies and roadrunners smarter than most human beings."

Jack Parson is eloquent on his website about the beauty of his home state: "The magnificence and awe of Northern New Mexico's landscape has long proven a magnet for writers and artists, who have flocked here from around the world. Yet its profound beauty still defies description and even the most articulate have struggled to express its blend of sun and earth. D.H. Lawrence could only say, 'For greatness of beauty I have never experienced anything like New Mexico. What splendor!'"

Visiting Parson's website is a wondorous journey; he has published a number of books containing a wide range of his photographs of New Mexico and many of the pictures appear on his website. Splendor indeed!

The book has a National Geographic quality about it, but the excellent printing, binding, photography and text make it an enduring picture book of the region.

If all the "I"s were taken out - the text would shrink 20%. It is a effort to read through this book. It is not a photographers guide.
