First class melodic rock from Germany, July 25, 2008
This review is from: Heavy Birthday (Audio CD)
1988's Heavy Birthday was the debut release from German melodic rock band Karo. Despite the title, I wouldn't exactly call this a heavy album. It's also a bit atypical of the German melodic rock scene in that it doesn't sound much like what Bonfire, Zeno or Axxis was releasing at the time.
Karo's sound is closer to the North American melodic rock of bands like King Kobra, Tyketto, Honeymoon Suite, and early Bon Jovi. It's very catchy (the guitar hooks are incredible), very melodic, positively drenched with keyboards (in a good way), and the vocals are very striking. Heavy Birthday is, in many ways, the perfect example of what made the mid 80's AOR/melodic rock sound so much fun. "Wanna Be Loved" wasn't a hit single here, but it should have been, as it's such a quintessential arena rock song.
Unfortunately, Heavy Birthday was the band's only album. They had the right kind of sound to break through to a wider audience, but for some reason that never happened. Fans of 80's era melodic rock will not want to miss out on this great album, especially now that it has been reissued.
Edition Notes: MTM reissued Heavy Birthday as part of their MTM Classix line. The 2005 reissue features digitally remastered sound and a pair of bonus tracks. The bonus tracks - alternate versions of "Wanna Be Loved" - don't add much, but the remastering is a definite plus.
