Must Have!, March 14, 2009
This review is from: Heavy Blue (Audio CD)
I have been a big fan of Larry Willis since "Justin Time" and I tend to pick-up what has his name on it. He is a great player that should be much better known than he is. He is particularly magnificent on ballads, second to none. He tends to give them a lushness that a lot of players cannot duplicate. One of the best nights musicallly I ever experienced was three sets of Willis with a trio in D.C. One of his notable collaborations is the Fort Apache Band. Several colleages from that appear on this CD which I think adds to the cohesion. This was perhaps the second of his CD's that I obtained but I play it the most. Jerry Gonzalez plays some mighty fine trumpet, mostly muted and Joe Ford plays some outstanding alto and soprano. All the songs are outstanding. Nice mix of ballads and uptempo modern jazz. Overall it is a very cool album. This is an album for listening, if you try to do something else you will likely be distracted.
