The greatest source of amazing tricks for modern electric guitar,
By
This review is from: Heavy Metal Guitar Tricks (Paperback)
Troy Stetina and Tony Burton made a great job with this book. First, "Heavy Metal Guitar Tricks" is divided in five parts: The left hand, Sound Effects, Two handed Techniques, The Whammy Bar and the last one is called Picking techniques and other tricks.
The great thing is at the end of each chapter, there's one solo which uses the techniques you just learn in that section. So that way you can apply your kwowledge in a stand alone solo. The authors say this is a book for players of all levels, but I guess is more apropiated for guitarist who have a previous experience with the instrument. So, there are techniques like Hammer-on or Pull-off that I'm sure you play them fairly well, but is great to take some time to play perfect, so it's not a waste of time. The two sections that surprised me were "Two Handed techniques" and "The Whammy bar". If you want to know how Randy Rhoads played the "Crazy train" and "Over the mountain" solos, you really have to check the "Reverse right hand Bending" it's amazing! Also, if you want to know how Satriani, EVH and Vai do those great sounds with the bar, you have to read this chapter. All you need is a guitar equiped with a locking tremolo system (F.Rose, Ibanez, Khaler, etc) One of the things I really liked is that you have to use the CD included because you need to hear the examples before and then play them on the guitar. That's a great way of ear training. I know this book will take your playing to other level, and there are some techniques that I haven't seen in other book or magazine. So I can tell you this is a great book !!!

Good for tricks, but that's about it!,

The title of this book is perfect. It is about squeals, whammy bar moves, two-handed tapping, and more. Starting out basic, it covers metal techniques from hammer-ons and pull-offs all the way to tremolo flutters and more. The example solos do not have a backing band, so they are a bit empty; I think that a little more time could have been put into showing useful examples of the tricks, but it's good enough (especially for the price!)

Call it "Metal Tricks 101",
This review is from: Heavy Metal Guitar Tricks (Paperback)
This book is more a survey of guitar tricks than anything. You'll receive a very basic overview of several different tricks like raking, harmonics and whammy bar use, but you won't find a lot of details or depth to the material presented.
The teaching material is very brief, generally only few sentences for each trick. Having worked through Stetina's "Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar," I was also accustomed to having lots of examples to practice along with to really drive home the new material. Unfortunately, you'll only find an example or two for each new idea presented. Overall, this will wet your pallete to dig a little deeper into the tricks presented here, but it will by no means give you more than a "101" level understanding.

This review is from: Heavy Metal Guitar Tricks (Paperback)
I bought this book thinking that Im going to learn the tricks of the trade about making unique sounds, As i was led to believe that this book has it all, As it was marketed for beginners aswell as advance players. Now Ive been playing guitar for over 15 years. Upon receiving this book and taking a brief glance at it. I realised that i must be a better player than Steve Vai, because i knew every thing that this book had to offer.
In Brief: If your starting to play guitar or just learning lead guitar, this book is great.. But if youve been playing for a while or you are in a band, dont waste your time with this book. |
