Thank goodness this date has finally been reissued. Seldom (if ever) has anyone captured the arc of a love affair (from roses to rueful reflection) as well as composer-arranger-bandleader Carla Bley does here. Titles such as "Light Or Dark" highlight (no pun) her gift for utilizing arresting ensemble colors, and the anticipation of nueva amour, while the title track's lyrical, wounded but soothing essence is also (as Lester Young once said), "original, man." Anyone who thinks the art of "jazz"orchestration has died the death should begin here. If you do, it wont be your last taste of Ms. Bley's work

This is the first Carla Bley album I bought and it still remains my favorite. The music was composed and arranged by Bley. It was recorded in 1983 and features a great ten-piece band. The music is melodic, upbeat and relaxed. It still sounds fresh after all these years; mainly because Bley uses traditional instruments. It's a typical Bley big band sound with sax, trumpet, tuba, flute, and trombone backed by a strong rhythm section and Bley's keyboards. There are no dated 1980s production sounds on this record.

The musicians she hired were some of the best around at the time. Hiram Bullock was one of the top session guitarists in the 1980s (Sting, Gil Evans, Jaco Pastorius, Steely Dan, Billy Joel, David Sanborn). Kenny Kirkland who played with Sting and Wynton Marsalis was a brilliant piano player. Steve Swallow has long been many jazz critics' favorite electric bassist. Victor Lewis (Woody Shaw, David Sanborn, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz) is an excellent drummer. To be honest, most reviewers don't seem to like this album, they consider it light and superficial. However I've been listening to Heavy Heart for 25 years and it stll sounds good to me.
