Buddy has still got it...and then some!!!!!,

This review is from: Heavy Love (Audio CD)
I have been a Buddy Guy fan for many years. I have seen him live and I have been to his bar in Chicago. I have a big collection of his cd's and I am not sorry I purcahsed this one! I really like it even if it is maybe not as rockin'as his others. And it's NOT heavy metal. I think Buddy gets better with every cd he puts out.Of course this isn't my favorite, but I enjoy it all the same.He wrote only 2 of the songs. "Heavy Love" is kinda funky--good song.I really like "Sat Night Fish Fry"---I like his songs that are a little funny and this one is different than his usual style. Song #7 is slightly retro maybe even Motown sounding??? but I like that one too. I am glad I bought it. If you are a true Buddy Guy fan, you'll like it too.

Old blues man shows the world how it's done.,

A blues legend who can hang with the best of them! The man proves he hasn't lost a step, and why he has inspired so many of the greats(SRV and Eric Clapton),and up and coming(Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd).I do have to say his albums are great, but is much better live.

if you liked "Stone Crazy" this album isn't for you,

Buddy really laid back for this album, unfortunately too far back. The groove was there, nice and swampy but buddy wasn't. It's a shame too, after "Slippin In" and "Damn Right I've Got the Blues", I expected much more. Hopefully this is just a transition album. The only saving grace on this album was "Had a Bad Night", and "Midnight Train".

If you get only one blues album-THIS IS IT!,

"Did Somebody Make A fool Out of You" is just fantastic cool with feel. Buddy Guy can make you feel a guitar play. "Midnight Train" great song but would have been better with Buddy alone. No disrespect to Jonny Lang but Buddy needs no assistance, he's been playing Chicago Blues for a while you know. Don't wait get it now.

Eh...,

Losing commercial ground to young blues rockers Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Buddy Guy hired their producer David Z (!) and set out to record an album of rock, soul and loud, frenzied blues rock.
Did you notice that I didn't include "blues"? Well, that's because this isn't a blues record. Sure, Guy covers "I Just Want To Make Love To You", but in an organ-laden funk-rendition, and most of this material, while not excactly bad, is pretty forgettable. And honestly...a ZZ Top cover on a Buddy Guy record? If you want to hear the reigning kind of Chicago blues playing generic funk and rock, "Heavy Love" is a dream come true. If you prefer him to play the blues, stay far away from it. 2 1/2 stars.

Thoroughly modern blues from a master of the blues,
By mdia@hotmail.com (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heavy Love (Audio CD)
Yes, even in Australia Buddy Guy is acknowledged as a legend of the blues. His new album " Heavy Love " is modern enough to be on the Pop charts (even though it probably won't get there!)but so shot through with the blues that it would please even the most narrow minded blues purist. On "Saturday Night Fish Fry" Buddy summonses up the ghost of Louis Jordan and then turns around and does a great version of ZZ Top's "I Need You Tonight". Yet it all sounds unmistakeably like Buddy Guy music. Don't just read this review-go out and get the album! Look, I grew up with CD's so I can still call them albums can't I?

You could say this is a good Cd if you did not know what Buddy Guy is capable of. He is singing a bunch of soul songs and barely plays a good solo on the album. Go get 'stone crazy', 'slippin in' or 'sweet tea' and dont waste your money here.

Good Guy,

Buddy Guy's CD "Heavy Love" is good but not the best Buddy guy CD out there. There are many who will argue what is better the "old" Guy or the "contemporary" Guy. I enjoy the modern Guy the best. With that said; however, this is not his best contemporary recording either. In my opinion Buddy's "Damn Right I Got the Blues" is his best CD. I will still recommend this CD to any Blues fan.

what would Muddy say...,

There is a great deal of arguing amongst fans of the "Blues" about Buddy Guy's music in this new century. I am reminded of Muddy Water's trip to England in 1958, when fans expected to hear the lonesome delta blues & instead got Muddy's raging electric guitar sounds. He took a wad of cash out of his pocket & waved it in the air & said something like, "how do you expect me to play like that when I got all this now?" Times & artists change & you either dig where your favorites are heading or else it's time to start listening to someone or something else. Me? I dig it & I bet if Muddy were here he'd groove on it, too.

A nice bit of the electric blues, from Buddy Guy, with a lot of organ and piano mixed in. But it's the truly wailing guitar numbers that really shine ("Had a Bad Night"). And the southern feeling "Are You Lonely Baby" also plays as an album highlight, as does a playfully funky cover of "I Just Want to Make Love to You." The slow blues grind of "Did Somebody Make a Fool Out of You" really changes the mood of the album, to a more somber, reflective atmosphere, with some timely acoustic guitar magic, before the album returns to its starting point in the upbeat, organ tinged "When the Time Is Right."
A very enjoyable electric blues album. |
