3.0 out of 5 stars heavy metal ditties, April 24, 2001

This review is from: Heavy Metal 2000 [Edited]: Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
With much anticipation did I pick up the Cd, what with a set list featuring Pantera, Machine Head, Monster Magnet, & Billy Idol, among others. Skirting past the opening track a crushing bonhomie of industrial clamour, Monster Magnet is a welcome change. I mean Wyndorf's whiskey laced at times restrained singing, with a rythm section as tight as vice, pulls up a fantastic show, and with lyrics like "it feels like but smells like fear," would be lapped up by any metal head worth his salt. The other track that impresses is Pantera's Immrotally Insane. Pantera are their usual blistering self, giving a thorough rundown of it. However the first glitch is System of Down, who just zooms away, without so much of a whimper. Machine head starts off like there's no tomorrw, but somehow lose the tempo midway. Now comes the best track, I mean man I haven't heard of Puya, before, and this track actually made me look up info about them on the internet. You talk about Ricky Martin, Lopez, being Salsa senstaion, man just lend an ear to "tirale" it's like Sepultura meeting Slayer and is creating a sound that is a treat for any metalhead. The extro is delectable, almost like Steely dan, like dollops of salsa guitar strewn with hardcore iron. The compilation, as the name suggests has been specifically targeted at the Heavy metal fans and overall it does comes across as one of the bright metal compilation of the year.
