5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC AND ESSENTIAL EARLY 80'S EURO-METAL!!! October 27, 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
WOW!!! What a reissue!!! This is truly one of the most beautiful metal reissues I've ever seen. It's is absolutely great that Psuedonym Records took the time to give the first four PICTURE LP's such a fine CD treatment. PICTURE were arguably the FIRST Dutch heavy metal band and this CD contains their first two LP's, "Picture 1"(1980) and "Heavy Metal Ears"(1981). Stylewise PICTURE are often compared to bands of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal which was at its peak around '80-'81. This comparison however, isn't quite accurate. There was far more to PICTURE than simple NWOBHM worship. PICTURE had something of their own to say and over the course of their first four LP's began to make a metal statement that would help forge what would come be known as Euro-metal or power metal. While PICTURE's first two LP's are not quite as "power metal-esque" as their fourth LP, "Eternal Dark", "Heavy Metal Ears" and "Picture 1" showcase a band with an extremely tight, aggressive, catchy and classy sound, just waiting to make it big. While PICTURE never quite made it big, they did play on several huge tours with much larger bands like Kiss, and as legend has it, PICTURE often outplayed the headliners when performing as an opening act. But back to the two LP's on this awesome disc. Both albums are amazing, blending elements of British acts like Saxon, Motorhead, Quartz, etc., with an almost AC/DC-like sense of songcraft. The production is amongst the BEST of the early-80's especially on "Heavy Metal Ears", and features a stunningly powerful guitar sound as well as some over the top double bass drummming action, strong anthemic vocals and rock solid bass. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Way Metal Should Be July 14, 2008
Format:Audio CD
For some reason, this CD, like Diamond Dreamer, is actually two albums combined. In the case of Diamond Dreamer, Eternal Dark is the second half, while in the case of Heavy Metal Ears, the second half is their first album, Picture. This has been the holy grail for me, as I was able to buy the vinyl versions of Diamond Dreamer and Eternal Dark while in Europe, but passed up on these two because I didn't know any better, and was never able to get hold of the CD until now.

Though I'm well familiar with many of the songs, I've never heard the album versions. Since their second album, Heavy Metal Ears comes first, I'll review it now.

Compared to the first one, the sound is a little cleaner, though I can understand why they were not happy with the mix. However, as a fan, I find this one, sound and all, is part of the charm. There are some great cuts on here, including, Heavy Metal Ears, Unemployed, Nighttiger, and Rock N Roll Under Your Spell, to name a few. This is heavy riff-oriented music and it rocks

As for Picture, the first album, you can tell a difference in the production from Heavy Metal Ears. I'll go into that in a minute. As for the songs, I love You Can Go. The live version is a little better, but the album cut is still a good song. Their biggest "hit" would have to be Bombers. It has improved with age, as witnessed from their recent performance at Sweden Rock 08. Other great cuts include Dirty Street Fighter, and the final cut, Fear.

The band was never happy with the mixes of either of these albums and I can see why. Picture, in particular, sounds like it was recorded in a garage, while Heavy Metal Ears, though much better, is missing sparkle, or maybe ambiance, which finally showed up on Diamond Dreamer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Get the picture!!?? November 23, 2002

I am very surprized that a label re-released that album on cd, this is far from being a classic, I didn't even know it came out of the Benelux.
This review is based on the LP Heavy metal ears, so only half of the cd.
Picture is a dutch band and I bought this album a long time ago when all you could find in record stores was IRON MAIDEN, SAXON AC/DC or TRUST-those were the happy days!
Picture is one of those bands that never really made it to a higher level, and when you listen to that album the first thing that comes to your mind is "I hope they're better at soccer than they are at heavy metal!".
Still it's not a bad album, most of the songs really rock-some are traditional NWOBHM others more bluesy. It's probably the production and the lack of experience that makes it sound weaker than it actually is.
I believe SAXON has done worse...but also much better.
For NWOBHM fans only.
