Not what you might expect,

Let me first start by saying this is not like the later polished pulp albums. It sounds more like two guys just enjoying messing about in the studio. The finished results sound oddly like a slightly more electronic version of Iggy Pop's albums from the seventies. It is sort of a high concept lowbrow album. Also, it's quite funny.Three words, BIG DUMB FUN.

(4 1/2): NotJust a Party Album,

So Jarvis of Pulp, after making one of the great pop albums of the '90s (Different Class), and other world class collections, got fed up with the music industry, the predatory English tabloids and the "hit singles industry." So, with a fellow Pulpster, he decided to turn up the volume and have fun. The result is loud and funny - some said the joke wasn't funny enough to sustain a whole album. But keep listening and these songs reveal Jarvis' peerless lyrical wit and ear for hooks. Okay - may as well admit that this won't be for every Britpop fun because the sound is closer to Marilyn Manson than Blur - but, overall: funny, cool, brilliant.

An experiment in Terror,
By alexander laurence (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Heavy Night With (Audio CD)
This is a cool record. Not really for those who are getting into Britpop ten years after the fact. But more like for people who like ARE Weapons and Fischerspooner. It's a band with art damage. It goes beyond Britpop. Heavy beats and aggressive lyrics. It's like some of the Jarvis Cocker side projects like Fat Truckers. Music to drink to. For women who love men who love drugs. "Heavy" is a cool song. They have apparently played a few shows. Not sure if they are going to bring this act to the USA. Electroclash or whatever they call it nowadays is on its last legs.
