4.0 out of 5 stars Not what you might expect, November 29, 2003

Let me first start by saying this is not like the later polished pulp albums. It sounds more like two guys just enjoying messing about in the studio. The finished results sound oddly like a slightly more electronic version of Iggy Pop's albums from the seventies. It is sort of a high concept lowbrow album. Also, it's quite funny.
Three words, BIG DUMB FUN.

4.0 out of 5 stars (4 1/2): NotJust a Party Album, February 22, 2004

So Jarvis of Pulp, after making one of the great pop albums of the '90s (Different Class), and other world class collections, got fed up with the music industry, the predatory English tabloids and the "hit singles industry." So, with a fellow Pulpster, he decided to turn up the volume and have fun. The result is loud and funny - some said the joke wasn't funny enough to sustain a whole album. But keep listening and these songs reveal Jarvis' peerless lyrical wit and ear for hooks. Okay - may as well admit that this won't be for every Britpop fun because the sound is closer to Marilyn Manson than Blur - but, overall: funny, cool, brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars An experiment in Terror, June 18, 2004

This is a cool record. Not really for those who are getting into Britpop ten years after the fact. But more like for people who like ARE Weapons and Fischerspooner. It's a band with art damage. It goes beyond Britpop. Heavy beats and aggressive lyrics. It's like some of the Jarvis Cocker side projects like Fat Truckers. Music to drink to. For women who love men who love drugs. "Heavy" is a cool song. They have apparently played a few shows. Not sure if they are going to bring this act to the USA. Electroclash or whatever they call it nowadays is on its last legs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heavy night with me, March 17, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Heavy Night With (Audio CD)
This colletion of songs are fantastic & for the night. The heavy - is a great song for open the album because the constant persuade voices. Le it ride - This piece have a great combination of the bass voice of Mister Cocker and his more Bright Timbre (pitch). Also is not a pop song...So this applied to the identity of the album a great is "art for art's sake". Beastmaster - is the third song of the album and the rythm chords of the guitars & synths are almost statical to give this vibe of "a la morrison on the rocks" (nice to roll the joint). Billy Jack- is the single of the album so you can see the video that this Cd include in (...) to have an impression. Is a complete joke really really good make.

Rod of IRON- is a great, really great song... For me is the classical music for a night ride. One of my favorites of course. Tuff it out - have reminiscence of Iggy pop or may be T.Rex. And is really like a song of the early mgmt's electric songs. Sexualized- Is really for sex. And with a lot of gain is just fantastic & for the bed...mmhm... or for the back seat of the car. Freud would be proud of this sonic invention. Muscle Music - present the estetique of the band like Hey We Are Having Fun Here...We Don't have to say anything, Just Listen. Make the album eclectic because of the sirens loops. B_REAL- Is really renovate and delicate but with a dance vibe. Previous - Is really cute if you are on psychoactives substances . Is sublime and put you in a trance. Battered - Is sounding like a band , like a pop band but the lyrics are unique. and is seems that this song was record and then they put a real drum in there so make the song organic n pleasant. Mary - remind me David Bowie in Space Oddity hahahhha!! Spontaneous final!!

Fat truckers.
Metronomy.
Melody club. ------------Check this group also------------

5.0 out of 5 stars how jarvis cocker..., March 18, 2005
This review is from: Heavy Night With (Audio CD)
the first time i heard "billy jack" i was reduced to giggles. this was the prequel to one of the greatest bands on earth? but after hearing the other songs i realized that it's really so jarvis cocker. the original music, the odd lyrics [Rod of Iron- "a doe a deer and female deer" !!!]this is jarvis at his unique jarvis-ish finest. i'm so glad for relaxed muscle! this album, and this band, is so much fun. this is definitely the kind of album i'd throw on at a party. i honestly can't get enough!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars IF you like Pulp you'll love this!, January 14, 2005
This review is from: Heavy Night With (Audio CD)
HOORAH! It's a new ex-pulper- Jarvis Cocker album!

Now it's not really exactly like pulp. It's more like a louder, raw-er sounding Pulp..like some of the dark stuff he did with Russel Senior in the early "Fire Years " of Pulp (ie. Freaks, Seperations etc)but without the violins or scary laughing and screaming. (Some of it is reminiscent of "Anorexic Beauty" from "Freaks). It's good, nevertheless. It's like they got together, had fun and created a great album. It includes songs about tv shows like "Beastmaster" and "Billy Jack" with sound effects to go with it, of howling wolves and gun shots, and lions. It's really funny stuff. The lyrics aren't deep or nothing, but hell, that doesn't matter. It's fun darnit! FUN FUN FUN. I Hope they make more. Life's no good without a Jarvis song every once in awhile. that's all

ciao.

Dave
