5.0 out of 5 stars Smart (and yes, a little slow) punk rawk.
People keep mentioning how slow this album is and I get the impression they're saying they like it because they think they should, OR they're saying they don't like it because they think they're not supposed to. Either way, why dwell on the fact that it isn't as fast as their other stuff? Sure, some of the songs aren't as catchy as on previous releases, but it is...

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm not most impressed with this one
I have actually owned this album for quite some time, i'd say about 6 years or so and its O.K. The only real song that stands out to me is Hobophobic. The others, they don't seem to stand out too much and are kinda mellow compared to the album directly before and after it. I'm not saying that it's a bad album, its just that most of the whole album doesn't feel very...

Either way, why dwell on the fact that it isn't as fast as their other stuff? Sure, some of the songs aren't as catchy as on previous releases, but it is still a great album. And the lyrics are probably some of the best written that I've seen, especially on tracks like DROP THE WORLD, and the haunting suburban drama, BLACK AND WHITE. I also think that FREEDOM LIKE A SHOPPING CART is one of NOFX's best songs, although I can well guess that I'm the only person who thinks it's that great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yup, it's a little different, but it's GREAT, June 23, 2000

Everyone thinks this CD was a sell out, but I actually listen to it more than any of my other NOFX CDs. Not that this is elevator muzak by any means, but sometimes your ears need a lil break from the sonic stuff NOFX usually puts out. If I had a band, this is what we'd sound like.

5.0 out of 5 stars the last great nofx album, December 8, 2005
By
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
this is my favorite nofx record. never mind how 'punk' it is - the songwriting is incredible and shows them at their creative peak. unfortunately this album had a negative reception with the fans, and nofx have never been as ambitious or adventurous with their music since. don't get me wrong, i love all their music, but this is the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the slow side, but NOFX is still the king of punk rock, November 26, 1999
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
They slowed their sound down a bit, but it doesn't bother me because it wasn't a result of the coaxing of MTV or commercial radio. They can change their sound but still remain hardcore.

I love NOFX, they bust out some of the best punk that has ever graced this earth. They don't have a best cd, so go buy them all.

4.0 out of 5 stars talented musicianship, June 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
I don't know much about this group, but I listen to lots of music, including lots of talent - these guys are really good. There are some great songs on the album. Some great creativity. These guys rock! It looks like some reviewers that are close to this band were disappointed with this album. Maybe those reviewers like to listen to songs that are very simple and mindless? Does this album sound to "commercial" to those reviewers? Not even close to an "Ozzy" album! This album is still "raw", with a garage band style-recording, but the recording quality is nevertheless very good. I like Foo Fighters, Rush, Queensryche, AC-DC, etc. This NOFX album is a nice change.

I love this cd. Every song on it is extremly awesome. Starts of with a very fast punk song and never lets up. Extremly funny aswell. Deffinitly pick this one up if you want to get into NOFX.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slower... but it's their best album to date!, November 25, 1999
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
It's their first album that isn't really monotonous... and the only one maybe. It's much better than their previous albums. Fat Mike's songwriting has really improved, musically and lyrically. The lyrics are definitely the best ones I've seen in a punk album, besides Bad Religion (for example 'Freedom lika shopping cart' or 'Love story', and for the guy who said they were loosing their humor (?), just take a look at 'Hot dog in hallway', 'Hobophobic', 'August 8th' or even the hilarious artwork). Most of the songs, though a few of them similar to their previous albums ('Hobophobic', 'Free the hostages', 'Black and white'), are very well written and aren't rushed at all. Especially songs like 'Freedom lika shopping cart', which is one of their best songs to date, 'Hot dog in a hallway', 'Love story' and 'Liza'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Petting Zoo review by NOFX on the Web!, December 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
What can i say about this one? I was definitely disappointed with they way they've been progressing. This one is definitely their softest album, but the album cover alone is worth the price!

NOFX completely changed their stule on this whole disc. The sound is much more melodic, and ska-influenced than ever before. It seems that alot of the younger, never NOFX fans prefer albums like this because it is more pleasing to the ear than the harder Maximum Rock 'n' Roll or Liberal Animation. Don't get me wrong, I still like this album and listened to it quite a bit for the first year but it doesn't have the staying power of Punk in Drublic or White Trash...

Songs to check out on this album are August 8th (about the death of Jerry Garcia the fat hippie), Hobophobic, The Black and White, Love Story, and Liza. I like each of these songs individually, but more true punk rock is needed on this disc.

If you like the melodic sound of NOFX and think So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes is awesome, you should pick this one up next. The two albums are somewhat similar in sound.

Rating: 7/10

4.0 out of 5 stars It isn't horrible, it just isn't Punk in Drublic, June 11, 2001
This review is from: Heavy Petting Zoo (Audio CD)
Whats the deal with these "fans" who say, "I'm so sick of NOFX, they always sound the same" yet when NOFX does some experimenting (Heavy Petting Zoo) all of a sudden it's "This is TOO different, TOO poppy". Oh shut up! The only reason this LP gets a bad rep is because it followed Punk In Drublic (the essential NOFX). First off, bands that remake the [same stuff] and end up [horrible] in the end-- look what happened to Pennywise; second if you want some real pop look what happened to Bad Religon. NOFX have done a great job at churning out good album after good album, Heavy Petting Zoo is no exception. Best tracks include Hobophobic, Whatever Didi Wants, Hot Dog, and Love Story.
