Steve Zaloga is an expert on Soviet Armored Fighting Vehicles. This is a well written study of the history of Soviet Heavy tanks. I particularly enjoyed reading and seeing the prototype tanks that never made it into production. There are many line drawings and text to help clarify some of the misconceptions of Soviet tank manufacture. I only wish that the cut away drawing were not cut in half by the pages. Can't have everything, but this is a very good primer, I definately recommend adding this to your collection.

I obtained this book to assist me with research for some of the work I was undertaking on some model kits of the IS-2 Tank. I found the information to be very useful. However, as has been mentioned in a previous review; detail is lost on the cut-out illustrations, due to the page binding. I believe these types of illustrations should be placed on fold out pages, to permit better examination of the detail by people such as model kit builders. Plus, a fold out design will allow for the page to be open while the reader undertakes other tasks, such as painting or assembling of small parts. I would like to see fold out pages incorporated in all of these books.

The writer has done a good job with this reference book, this book is now fifteen years old and an update would be good, if possible. Well done Steve Zaloga!

An exhaustive book about the evolution, variations and derivatives of the Stalin series.
A must for modellers, if you like to be accurate to the date and scenario of your model.

Good for it's day when there was nothing better, but now the book by Baryatinsky "The IS Tanks" is head & shoulders over this one. This book is so over taken by Baryatinsky that further review is pointless.
