5.0 out of 5 stars Real Country for a change!, August 14, 2004

Glad to see that albums like this are still being cut. "Nothin to Say (Austin vs. Nashville)" says it all (Waylon would be proud)! If you like real country music and think that the only real country radio station left is KHYI you'll like this album. With guys like Brian, Houston Marchman, Wayne Hancock etc. at least REAL Country Music will survive!

I bought this after hearty recommendations from people on the Tom Russell message board and have played it a LOT since I got it. There are similarities to Tom Russell's work; and there are similarities to Gordon Lightfoot (aside from the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) but it's not really all that derivative. The song selection is excellent and execution is very very good. His voice is wonderful and the feeling in the songs is always present. Great guitar, great instrumental accompaniment. (I liked his comment on the liner notes about losing 12 pounds doing the drum accompaniment!) And the bonus track at the end about urban legends is almost worth the price of the album all by itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, June 14, 2005

Easily one of the best albums I've ever heard. Brian Burns has a beautiful way of incorporating Texas history into some of his songs (as evidenced by his album "Eagle & the Snake, Songs of the Texians"), and "Indianola" is a wonderful example. Also one of the finest renditions of "Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" I've ever heard.
