Book Description

August 2000
Few of us can or even want to relate to the drama of fact and fiction seen in THE PERFECT STORM, yet the coastal and offshore waters in which we do our recreational boating often serve up storms of a magnitude that can make a believer out of the hardiest skipper. Even an imperfect storm can be a demanding exercise best handled with practical survival seamanship skills combined with a modern drag device.

Boating literature is replete with incidents wherein sailors are unexpectedly put in a survival situation while pursuing their recreational adventures and many are found wanting in survival skills. Without those skills and not having a drag device on board when the chips are down, they find few survival options left other than prayer. When you go offshore be a little pessimistic and consider drag devices before you leave the dock--for afterwards may be too late. Avoid becoming a storm statistic like the ANDREA GAIL.

Editorial Reviews

Review

...examines drag devices in great detail, drawing from his personal observations, information from manufacturers, and reports from users. -- Chuck Hawley, West Marine

...over the learning curve in an express elevator. This book belongs in the library of cruising and armchair sailors alike. -- Victor Shane, Drag Device Data Base

From the Publisher

This new book draws on the knowledge of many years of engineered development of sea anchors and drogues that began after the tragic Fastnet Race of 1979. The author describes the operating principles of the devices, their design details, and tactics for their use on power and sail boats up to approximately 100 feet LOA. The book is a treasury of knowledge on the use of sea anchors and drogues in storm survival situations. They are the one form of insurance in which you the insured benefit rather than your heirs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Please note: Midwest book review, March 16, 2006
By
This review is from: Heavy Weather Tactics Using Sea Anchors & Drogues (Paperback)
It should be noted that Midwest book review gives 5 stars to every book they rate. This is a good book on the subject of Sea Anchors and Drogues but is a bit dated in some of the information it presents. It relies heavily on data supplied by the makers of the equipment, thus the assessment of their performance is somewhat skewed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb presentation from a seasoned author, July 14, 2004
This review is from: Heavy Weather Tactics Using Sea Anchors & Drogues (Paperback)
Now in an updated second edition, Heavy Weather Tactics: Using Sea Anchors And Drogues is a straightforward reference and guidebook for anyone charged with the responsibility of sailing a yacht or motor vessel out of sight of land. Covering how deep water and coastal waves behave, how to deploy a sea anchor or drogue, what size drag device is needed for different types of vessels, how to create a quick makeshift sea anchor if needed, and much more, Heavy Weather Tactics is highly recommended for its straightforward, no-nonsense style of presenting very solid information. A superb presentation from a seasoned author who has traveled over 40,000 sea miles in racing and cruising boats.
