More About the Author

Dr. Paul Pimsleur (b. 1926, d. 1976) devoted his life to language teaching and testing and was one of the world's leading experts in applied linguistics. He was fluent in French, good in German, and had a working knowledge of Italian, Russian, Modern Greek, and Mandarin Chinese. After obtaining his Ph.D. in French and a Masters in Psychology from Columbia University, he taught French Phonetics and Linguistics at UCLA. He later became Professor of Romance Languages and Language Education, and Director of The Listening Center (a state-wide language lab) at Ohio State University; Professor of Education and Romance Languages at the State University of New York at Albany; and a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Heidelberg. He did research on the psychology of language learning and in 1969 was Section Head of Psychology of Second Language Learning at the International Congress of Applied Linguistics.

Dr. Pimsleur was a member of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), American Educational Research Association (AERA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and a founding member of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

His many books and articles revolutionized theories of language learning and teaching. After years of experience and research, Dr. Pimsleur developed a new method (The Pimsleur Method) that is based on two key principles: the Principle of Anticipation and a scientific principle of memory training that he called "Graduated Interval Recall." This Method has been applied to the many levels and languages of the "Pimsleur Programs."

For one and a half years I am listening to Pimsleur Language Programs in my Car. My journey to work takes 40 minutes so the 30 minute long lessons twice a day are perfectly timed. During the car journey I never had much to do before. Now I learn Hebrew and the speed in which I learn is amazing. I bought courses from other companies but the Pimsleur method is no comparison. The constant rearranging of already learned and the adding of new Material really makes you work with the Language. Great Israeli native male and female speakers together with an English speaking narrator bring you in the right mood. Here you also experience the mentality of Israel (sometimes with great Jewish humor). It's no repetition of basic phrases like other programs that I tried before. All courses are easily copied into MP3 format and transferred onto any MP3 Player. Although it is a bit pricier than other language Programs with Pimsleur you will experience first class learning with amazing results.

This is an excellent learning tool and is best for me while i"m alone driving. The length of each lesson allows you to complete a lesson on short to medium drives. The quality of the cd is such that you have no difficulty understanding diction. One very minor drawback is that written language is not stressed enough. Overall, this is an ideal learning tool for me and at 67, I am progressing very well. Now that three levels are available, this series is a good buy for learning modern spoken hebrew.

Pimsleur, though overpriced, is simply the best quality foreign language resource on CD. Nothing can beat a teacher and a classroom, if you have good ones, but this definitely comes close. I listen to these CDs whenever I'm in the car or even on my iPod whenever I'm walking around campus. It's a good complement to my Hebrew class. I'd never trade it for any other type of language CD. If you have the chance to buy Pimsleur, DO IT!!! I know it's expensive, but many good deals are out there, especially on Amazon. Sometimes it's even possible to buy a $300 set of CDs for just over a hundred dollars or less. I sold my Japanese I set for $100, so I know it's possible to find them for much cheaper than retail.

Words are repeated and enough time is given for the learner to repeat in the target language the desired translations. The words used seem to be the same ones I'm learning in class, so as I use them, I can go along with class without being out of sync.

Pimsleur is great. In one volume, I am able to learn enough language to get along in the foreign language in the most important instances. Just knowing 100 words in a foreign language is a way to get you out of 90% of your problems in a foreign country. I know it because I'm a linguist and have been doing this since I was 13, 30 years ago.

Please try out Pimsleur in whichever language you are learning. Again, they are simply the best tool that you can use besides your teacher.
