4.0 out of 5 stars Most Logical Learning-Hebrew-by-Association Book!

2.0 out of 5 stars too basic, but then again, not...
Although it seems to be a book for absolute beginners, it really is not. It helps to have at least some working knowledge of the Alef-bet before embarking on this book, plus there was no phonetic pronunciation guide.

Throughout the day, I can easily recall each Hebrew word on its item learned that morning, plus those of previous mornings' study. This is much faster assimilation than just memorizing lists of vocabulary words. Am grateful to own and use this simple, effective tool, but, will give it only four stars due to a serious handicap: it lacks both syllable breaks and accent marks. Nevertheless, it remains a worthy investment, far above its modest price.

I am homeschooling my son in Hebrew. It is interesting to note, I have never had a Hebrew lesson myself thus, I really need to learn vocabulary too. This book was the answer. It helped me to create word lists based upon the scene. It showed common words to ease us into the vocabulary. I began to notice the difference between masculine and feminine words. My son noted this too. This is a great intro into improving reading skills and building conversational skills too. In the back of the book there is a glossary in case, you really cannot figure out the word. I have also copied the pages to have my son color it too. It does help make it a bit more interactive. By the end of these lessons, we will have learned over 500 words according to the authors. I know the rest of Hebrew is not going to be this easy!

I bought this together with the Hebrew Picture Dictionary by Marlene Goodman.
However I rate this better than the above book. reasons:

1) great fun! Straight from the post office, I went to [the store] and bought a cheap watercolor paint set. I am an adult but this was fun - mixing colors, painting and learning the hebrew word.

2) unlike what other reviewers say, the fact that there is no pronounciation guide is its strength. When the hebrew word is transliterated, one tends to remember the english word and forget the hebrew word. This way, you are forced to focus only on the hebrew word.

3) it costs one-third of the price

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, May 23, 2008

This book is basically an American coloring book with Hebrew labels on the items in the black-line drawings. The Hebrew lettering is tiny, there's no transliteration, so you won't be able to learn how to pronounce the words unless you can already read Hebrew fairly well. The drawings include things like pigs on the farm, a fireplace in the house, the English alphabet in the classroom, the English alphabet written in cursive on the blackboard and signed--once again in English--"Mrs. Jones," a calender with "June" written on it in English, and other things that seem out of place in a book meant to teach Hebrew. Some of the words in Hebrew are also wrong. The vase, for example, is labeled "Tzintzenet" (in Hebrew letters), which is the Hebrew word for "jar." It should be "Agartal." A hippo at the zoo is labeled "Behemot," which means "beasts." (I don't know why the hippo is labeled "beasts" and not any of the other animals.) It should be labeled "Hippopotam."

I had intended to use this book to help teach my daughter Hebrew. Instead it's taught me how not to write a book intended to teach Hebrew. If it wouldn't cost me more to return it than to keep it, I would.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book but Typeface is too Light, June 3, 2008

This review is from: Hebrew Picture Word Book (Paperback)
"Hebrew Picture Word Book" displays a thorough range of hebrew nouns illustrated with very clearly drawn black-and-white line sketches on large white pages. Visual learners will enjoy looking at the sketches labeled in Hebrew only--without the use of English. The following fifteen categories are included:

Picnic
Farm
Town
Zoo
Park
Vehicles
Girl's Bedroom
Boy's Bedroom
Classroom
Living Room
Bathroom
Kitchen
Dinner Table
Supermarket
Beach

Each category takes up a full spread of two pages. In the back of the book, a lexicon lists all Hebrew vocabulary words with their genders and English equivalents in either their singular form or their plural form--but not both.

There is only one drawback: The vocabulary words are printed in very light gray ink on white background--instead of in black ink as one would expect (Hence my lower rating.) One can still discern the letter-forms with a little straining, but the dots are indistinct because they are so light. Moreover, the lexicon in the back takes some struggling to read, as well, because of its small font size (probably nine point). Readers with less-than-perfect eyesight would do well to have a magnifying glass on hand for clear viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful for new learners, July 8, 2005

I consider thios book to be one thery best among books of beginning Hebrew. The book is divided into scenes that illustrate common situations in life. I found that that was the most useful trait of all. With a basic understang of the Aleph -Bet, it is possible to gain much whether you are a child or and adult. the 12 year leading level is not accurate

This book helps the reader to learn Hebrew words using visual clues. It is highly motivational and fun not only for children but for adults that work with them. This is a great addition to our Hebrew learning library.
