At Last!,
By Stephanie Michaels (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hebrew Reading and Writing Self Taught (Paperback)
At last someone understands the fundamentals of teaching one of the most exciting and profoundly important languages ever spoken, written or read in the history of mankind. From cover to cover, the contents of this precious little "how to manual" is simplistic, yet, effective. Whether the student desires to become a biblical scholar or simply use the language in everyday conversation with others, this book provides them with the basic tools for their future successes in mastering the language.Margolis uses an approach that many others never consider when teaching the adult learner. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to learn the alphabet of a new language from tiny letters that look like they are all connected. Not only do small letters make it next to impossible to distinguish one from the next in most cases, the task is further complicated should the student attempt to read simple words in a basic sentence. And perhaps this is good reason why many new students are defeated before they begin and quickly abort their language project altogether. Margolis provides the student with large easy to read letters, in both the printed and crusive styles in a double spaced format. While providing excellent practice exercises for comprehending the vowel system, she provides the student with a chance to experience the context of every Hebrew letter in the alphabet and its sound. Moreover, Margolis is a master at applying the same advantages that we all had in grade school when learning the English Alphabet and vowel system. To become proficient in any language no student should avoid the elementary basics. Even if you are a little bit skeptical, 20 minutes a day is all it takes to build your confidence. But, if you are a serious student, then 30 minutes a day will build you a lifetime of opportunity of reading, writing, and speaking Hebrew! This little gem of a book offers every new student in Hebrew a great and exciting beginning!

Easiest book for English-only speakers to learn Hebrew,

This review is from: Hebrew Reading and Writing Self Taught (Paperback)
I didn't know an alef (Hebrew "A") from a leaf (think trees) when I opened this book. After doing the excercises I was reading, writing in both Hebrew print and cursive! It took days not months of work. The gradient of learning is like walking up stairs. It doesn't make you feel stupid and it manages to keep you focused and progressing.
I'm also impressed by the way this book gets you speaking correct Hebrew vocabulary. The answer pages make sure you pro-noun-ce everything like a native. Now if only I could find a Hebrew grammer book this easy to understand.

Hebrew Reading and Writing,

I recently to converted Judaism and I wanted to learn Hebrew. I chose this text mainly because it was both a reading primer and a workbook, and it had a detailed answer key. The exercises were lots of fun and provided excellent practice. I learned to read in about six weeks. Great book. It does everything it claims to do.
