About the Author

Hecate devotee and Astrologer, Jade Sol Luna is the first Westerner ever to reconstruct Jyotish (Hindu Astrology) into a Greco-Rorman format. He became certified in Astrology from the A.F.A in Arizona, Dynah Academy in India and the A.I.V.S in Santa Fe New Mexico. Luna has written for several magazines including Hinduism Today and Luna has been featured on several Radio shows across the world. Jade Luna has traveled extensively around the planet, lecturing and conducting workshops on Astrology and Ancient Roman-Greco mysticism. Jade has traveled to India more than 30 times and spent a great deal of time with various teachers, Saints and Sadhu's in Asia. Jade Luna consults with people privately. He usually presents a few seminars each year at various locations world wide. During and after Luna's formal Astrological training, Bhau Kalchuri (disciple of Meher Baba) and Kal Babaji (Khajuraho India), tutored him in advanced mysticism and other forms of classical Indian lore. Jade Luna has now transformed his Indian studies into a Greco-Roman practice, showing the spiritual connection that the Ancient Mediterranean had with India. Jade Luna is the author of Hecate: Death, Transition and Spiritual Mastery, Hecate II: The Awakening of Hydra and will be releasing a series of Astrology books in the near future. Jade has been one of the most successful Astrologers in the world and has maintained a high level practice for over 16 years.

If you're looking for contemporary material on historic Hecate worship or any sort of how-to instruction, this is not the book for you. The author's bio refers to him as a full-time astrologer and Brahmin priest who "shifted all his energy into the Greek Goddess Hecate". This book is an eclectic philosophical mish-mash of East fused with West - of Kali worship concepts, Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, the author's personal system of astrology, a smattering of the Chaldean Oracles and Greek Magical Papyri, all with a coating of Hecate "frosting" and a dash of Dark Paganism for good measure.

The actual genuine and only sourced historic and trustworthy material on Hecate is found at the very end of the book in approximately 12 pages lifted word for word from the Theoi Project online - in these hard economic times, why should anyone pay $15.99 for information they can access for FREE online? The rest is just "soft polytheism" (all Dark Goddesses are One Dark Goddess) and reductionist Wicca that essentially says Kali and Hecate are the same Dark Goddess. The author then applies and retranslates titles/images of Kali to Hecate and then shrouds it all in Latin - even retranslating familiar Tantric, Hindu and Vedic concepts into Latin - for example saying that Maya (illusion) is Maia - one of the Greek Pleiades and later a Goddess of Spring. Sorry but sounding alike doesn't make it the same - ask any etymologist.

Ancient Roman Wiccans? Although an intriguing idea, the "Viccanus" material beginning on page 51 is highly speculative. The author says that the word Wicca comes from the Latin Viccanus (sic) -actually it's vicanus - one "c" - technically meaning villager - a synonym for a pagan or rustic living outside the Pomerium of Rome. It even states the ancient Viccanus (i.e.

This book , is about Hecate and it has invocations in Latin, but as a kali devotee, it has really drawn me deeper towards Mother Goddess. This book is not so much for people who are just interested in literal side of spirituality - there is no philosophy in it nor it is a lame translation from the vedas, as so many other books are. IT HAS DRY FACTS IN IT- accept it or not.

Mainly for those who are ardent devotees of The Mother ( Divine Mama in my language) and need to hear someone speak who has followed that path. Kali Path is not easy and it is difficult to accept the pain of the heart and fear of death that comes with it- so the purpose of this book, to me, wasn't to tell me how to experience divine bliss- but rather how to deal with what stands in the way.

I have been following heart based meditation for years and it was surprising to me that how little acceptance people have for the pain and fear that their own heart holds- including people doing the same kind of meditation- and how that pain, does not allow them to experience the peace their own soul craves for. We need a little bit more work in this area, and Jade's book forms a foundation. It is definitely one or more steps ahead of the level of spirituality that people are used to, esp in the west. Some of the topics that I really liked were Story of Hecate Chthonia, The wheel of hecate- that refers to shadows around the heart, Death- The next great experience, and the three phases of dying.

It is interesting how most modern spiritual "gurus" try to lay the path in front of people and cant even tell what comes with that path. Thats like disregarding all the work that each one of us has done in all our lifetimes and that Life is the greatest guru.

Regrettably, this book was a major disappointment. As I am not "into" Eastern religions and Buddhism, etc., I found much of the book to be totally worthless to me. I "know" the Hekate "in Ancient Greek Religion," the Hekate of Hesiod, and the Hekate described by Greg Crowfoot. "My" Hekate, to Whom I am personally devoted, is the ancient Greek form, not this conglomoration of this, that and the other religions of the proximate geographical area. Likely the scholarship is there, but I found the book boring and of little interest, and The Lady's depictions totally alien, through the first 64 pages, or the entire first half of this 128-page work. Maybe it's just me....

It got better with the chapter on "Hecate's Forms," but even there some of the descriptions and invocations were quite strange [at least to me], to say the least. It would've helped if tranlations had been provided for the invocations, so that we would know what we might be saying to Her.

The chapter on "Hecate Hymns" was wonderful -- back to the ancient Greek form -- and the last chapter on "Hecate in Literature" was also excellent. I will say that I WILL keep this book, as it does have it's good points, at least for me. SOME/HALF of the material makes it worthwhile, but not enough for me to praise it or highly recommend it, other than as a supplement to one's collection of material on Hekate.

I sincerely hope that the CD ["Silver Moon/Black Sun"]that I ordered together WITH this book, is better than the book itself. It is devoted to Hekate a great deal, so, we'll see. Sometimes, depending on other reviewers' opinions is NOT the best way to go in making buying decisions.
