4.0 out of 5 stars A great Artist is remembered., December 27, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hector Borla 1937-2002 (Spanish Edition) (Hardcover)
While traveling in Buenos Aires during 1991 on business, I fell in love with a painting hanging in the boardroom of a client I was visiting. I tried to purchase it, but my client declined to part with it. He did know the artist and was kind enough to arrange a brief visit to his studio before I returned to New York City. I went to the studio and met the artist who turned out to be Hector Borla. I looked around his studio and saw a large painting (40" by 60") that Senor Borla had just finished, a double portrait of his version of the Ingres portraits of Countess d'Houssanville, that hangs at the Frick Collection, and Monsieur Charles Joseph Laurent Cordier that hangs at the Louvres Museum. We agreed on a price, Mr. Borla rolled it into a large tube and I carried it home to New York City several hours later. It is a great painting, fun to look at, while at the same time displaying the artist's exceptional talent and vivid imagination. Thank God someone invested the time and effort in producing a quality monograph of the late Senor Borla despite the absence of many of his paintings. The five essays in Spanish and translated into English contain the usual abstruse writing found in art books. There is very little about Senor Borla's life, which ended on January 11, 2002. The reproductions of the paintings pictured are of high quality, although they do lack provenance. The size of the book, 10 ½" square allows for enough space for the artwork to be comfortably and adequately displayed.
